Backup data does not go to tape.

Hi,

I am using Networker 7.4.1 on Solaris server having same version on all the clients. Before few days everything was working fine, but for the last three days the backup of a windows client ( Windows Server 2003 SP2) is having a very strange problem. In the logs there is no error but the data does not go to the tape. For all other clients backup is behaving perfectly. I have unistalled and reinstalled the client also but with no use.

Please suggest me.

Thanks Hrvoje

I have already run the client initiated backup with following command:

save -s BackupServer -b Pool DataPath

The command does not give any error, but data is not written to tape.

Are there any pending messages on server? If you start client initiated backup does it run (you will need CLI command to specify pool).

I've just seen Hrvoje had you manually run from the client and specify a pool so this should rule out what I said above. It will also rule out directive or scheduling misconfigurations.

Am I right to assume that the save -b pool folder command runs to completion and reports success but appears to have backed no data up? Can you clarify that and the reason you believe nothing has backed up.

This sounds like your pool selection criteria are not configured correctly - when you start the backup go to the Alerts tab in Monitoring and see what pool of tapes it is waiting for - chances are this is a pool that does not have tapes available in the library and thus it is waiting for media... Next go to Media Pools in the Media tab and check the pool of tapes that Networker is wanting and the pool you would like it to go to and amend the criteria so that the pool you would like the data to go to provides the best match (my suspicion would be that you have added level criteria to the pool which is why it is successful for some days and fails for others but it may be to do with the client itself as you specify that it is only one client affected).

I may have misinterpreted this - you may be saying backup completes but it does not back any data up - if so have you configured a directive to skip all files? Otherwise provide some more info...

Do you see any pending messages/alerts on the server side when you run backup of this client? Also, if this is Windows, it might be waiting for VSS to complete its work - in such case checking writer status would be recommended.

Take a look in /nsr/index and see if that client is listed under different aliases... If you have been deleting and re-adding clients it is possible you have got two indexes for one client.

If not you could try doing index checks:

nsrck -L6 clientname
nsrck -m
nsrim -X

- it may be that there is some kind of index or media database corruption.

I had already done run the nsrck -L6 and nsrim -X command. I will run these commands again and let you know.

Thanks.

In the index directory, there is only one folder for this client.

Hi All,

I have tried to recover the data. In required volumes it shows correct volume. But when we start the recovery, it causes an error that the specified files are not found on the volume. When I see the save sets in Media->Volumes it shows blank.

At the time of backup it asks for the correct pool tape and tapes are available on that pool.

I think we need to establish what is going on here as this is starting to get confusing. Firstly you say nothing backed up, then you say you cannot restore it!?!

Let's look at the backup problem - could you post the message Networker gives when you try something like save -b pool c:\temp and we can move on from there...

There should be only one. But I'm confused now, how come that from backup issue we ended up talking about restore issue?

Sorry, Since that site is secure one no data can be copied from there. But when we run this command it shows a list of files beeing backed up and then in last it shows the number of files backed up. But again no data is present in tape.
