Backup server could not detect the Tape Library

Two week ago, I ran the "changers -dv" command, and the output was:

E:\Program Files\Legato\nsr\bin>changers -dv
scsidev@2.0.0:Vendor , Product , Revision <3.21>
Data Transfer Element at address 256 is scsidev@2.1.0
Device:Vendor , Product , Revision
Type:Tape
System Name: \\.\Tape0
Data Transfer Element at address 257 is scsidev@2.2.0

60 ST Element(s) starting at address 4096

2 DT Element(s) starting at address 256

DT->DT,DT->IE,DT->ST,______
______,______,______,______

Today, I had a problem with my backup tape library. I tried to troubleshoot the problem, so when I run the command "changers -dv" again. I have noticed that the information on the \\Tape0 is not available. In fact, the current output is:

E:\>changers -dv
scsidev@2.0.0:Vendor , Product , Revision <3.21>

1 MT Element(s) starting at address 1
60 ST Element(s) starting at address 4096
12 IE Element(s) starting at address 16
2 DT Element(s) starting at address 256

Somehow, the backup server could not detect the scsidev@2.2.0. Does anyone know how to fix this??? Thanks

Hi,

Have you launched #inquire -l?

Does the output show something about \\.\Tape0?

It seems problems with the connections.

Is device attached directly to Backup Server by SCSI port?

Have you seen if O.S. Backup Server is seing this device?

You have to see connections between Backup Server and Device, drivers, communications, if device works ok, ...

Regards.

I run the "inquire -l" command and the output is:

E:\>inquire -l

-l flag found: searching all LUNs, which may take over 10 minutes per adapter
for some fibre channel adapters. Please be patient.

scsidev@0.0.0:HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8081N0208|CD-ROM
scsidev@2.0.0:DELL PV-136T 3.21|Autochanger (Jukebox), \\.\Changer0
S/N: DELL13401A84021
scsidev@6.6.0:PE/PV 2x2 SCSI BP 1.1 |Processor
scsidev@7.6.0:PE/PV 2x3 SCSI BP 1.1 |Processor
scsidev@10.0.0:DELL Container |Disk
scsidev@11.0.0:DELL Management |Processor

It does not show the //./Tape0. which means there is no communication between the //Tape0 and //Tape1 device with the O/S.
The device is attached directly to the backup server by SCSI port.
I look at the Device Manager and everything is normal.

If there is a communication problem, how can I resolve this??? I've tried to reboot the system many times but the problem is not solved.

As you told us that the devices are attached directly to the backup server by SCSI port, I suggest you to restart your Backup Server while the Tapes are on

Hi,

If Backup Server is running on Windows, try to delete from Device Manager the devices \\.\Tape0 and \\.\Tape1, after this, try 'scan new hardware'.

You have to see the devices, but you have to see if these devices have assigned logical name (\\.\Tape0 and \\.\Tape1). If not, you have to install drivers.

After install drivers, launch #inquire -l and tell me if you can see devices.

I have shutdown the backup server, shutdown and start the tape library, then start the backup server. The \\.\Tape1 is now working whereas \\.\Tape0 does not work. Whenever I try to Mount a Volume to the \\.\Tape0, there is an error in the Monitoring log: "Read open error: drive status is There is not a tape in the drive". Can you please advise me how to troubleshoot this? Thanks

In my \\.\Tape0 is mounted with slot1 "unlabeled" volume and has no bar code. Do you know how to unmount this drive and load another drive in \\.\Tape0???

Hi,

In first launch, you cannot move any media from drive 1 because it is empty.

In second launch, the output is telling there is not media in slot 1.

Can you probe with other slot which yes has media?

Regards.

I tried the other commands: and the output were

E:\>sjimm scsidev@2.0.0 drive 1 slot 1
SJIMM: Resource device
Code:0x29, Str=

E:\>sjimm scsidev@2.0.0 slot 1 drive 1
SJIMM: Input/output error

Many of the volumes turned to "unlabeled". I delete the Media and Index in the Media/Volume and try to label the "unlabeled" volumes, the label operation failed.

There are other slots that has media:

E:\>sjimm scsidev@2.0.0 slot 50 drive 2
SJIMM: Input/output error
Code:0x23, Str=

Ok,

#mt -f \\.\Tape0 status is telling you that there is not volume mounted in drive.

Have you tryed to launch others commands (sjimm)?

Regards.

Hi,

You can try launch scsi commands:

#mt -f \\.\Tape0 status -->it output if device has or not a media mounted.
#mt -f \\.\Tape0 offlin --> if device has a media mounted, this media is ejected.

Are you sure scsidev jukebox is 2.0.0 or has it changed?

If scsidev is correct, launch:

#sjimm scsidev@2.0.0 drive 1 slot 1 --> in this way, you can move media from \\.\Tape0 (drive 1) to slot 1 (or other empty slot).

#sjimm scsidev@2.0.0 slot 1 drive 1 --> in this way, you can move media from to slot 1 to \\.\Tape0 (drive 1).

These commands are useful when you have doubts about if the problem is NetWorker or hardware.

Regards.

Inma Bernabe.

Hi,

In the last output, tell you that drive 2 has a media mounted.

When you label the volumes, does this action fail in two drives or only in drive 1?
