Best practice for installing cumulative hotfixes
What is the best practice in the 9.2 family for installing cumulative hotfixes...for example from 9.2.0.4 to 9.2.0.5. (on both server and clients)
Should the old version be uninstalled before installing the new version, or can the new version be installed over the old version?

Best practice is to wait first SP and then install it once post-patch 3 comes one (eg. 9.2.1.3 or 9.2.1.4). Note that in case of 9.2 first GA release was 9.2.0.3 (earlier version got pulled out), 9.2.0.4 was there to address some server issues I suspect (as it was released in Linux and Windows versions only) and now (as of yesterday we have 9.2.0.5. If you are to go to 9.x code then recommended release for backup server is surely 9.1.1.4 (which in my opinion has some annoying issues with cloning). If you need some new functionality provided by 9.2 code, most likely that functionality is on client side so you would use latest patch release.
On both Windows and UNIX/Linux you can either uninstall old version and install new one or use update option (eg. yum update). If using folders other than standard ones, make sure to use same paths once you install new version. I'm not sure with 9.1.x on Windows, but I noticed with 9.0.x that standard client installation on Windows would always use standard path and option to changed it was greyed out... in such cases, you must install client from server package.
