Your server is defined in management window. Your old server is defined as client and seen in local hosts within configuration&monitor window. Those two should be independent.
Or are you trying to remove client which used to be server in the past?
no, the old bakup server is stated as storage node but has no devices to it. In the NMC, under the device tab, the old backup server is there. I try to delete it, but the above error message occurs
I have uninstalled Nwer from the old server, so its not even a client to the new backep server. but, it still occurs under local hosts in the management window. Also, when i click on one of the clients, the old backup server appears in the right pane and i can't delete it.
To be this sounds as you have old server still defined with devices in current configuration (if you see it under devices). The view under storage node is not important and there you will see all storage nodes ever configured. You may wish to send your resources to your support for inspection and based on them they could provide you exactly step by step mechanism how to resolve your issue.
This is a very easy process: The reason is quite right, because you can't delete a storage node while you still use its devices. To remove this storage node, follow the following items: 1- From Networker Console, right click the Library name, and select "Re-Configure Library" 2- In the menu, unckeck all devices of the storage node that you want to delete, this will make the library to unconfigure the unchecked devices. 3-finish the configuration. Now as you see, the devices of the storage node are removed from the Devices lists. 4-remove the storage node from Networker Console.

Have you attempted delete device with #jbedit?
If you migrated Server, the new Backup Server has the same Client ID that old Backup Server?
