Changed tape Info not getting syncronised in Networker 7.3

Hi All,

We are using Networker 7.3 to backup AIX mount points using Snapshots onto a Quantum PX500 tape library. As per our company policy, we need to remove the tapes from the library daily after the backup completes and new tapes are inserted for next days backup. This is where the problem (atleast I feel it is) starts.

When the status of the Jukebox returns to "Ready", Networker still shows the old tapes in the Devices pane. "nsrjb -I" does not update the slots instead it says the info is already syncronised. Now, as a workaround we "mount" the tapes (old ones as shown in the devices pane) to the drives, an error is reported "expected some volume YY but it is CC" and updates the correct info.

We than fire the backup and every thing works fine.

My query is that why is the changed tape info not getting syncronised/replicated in the Networker database

nsr logs during the period tapes are removed and new tapes are put into the drive is as follows:
05/14/07 19:29:31 nsrd: media warning: Jukebox `Quantum Px506' Hardware status of jukebox 'Quantum Px506' changed from 'ready' to 'detected hardware change'

1. If you are still using 7.3 - upgrade now!
2. Do you export tapes via NW?
3. Inventory behavior has changed - check manual. Depending on what is the answer to 2) there are different ways how to achieve what you are after.

1) Is the upgrade free or chargable pls?

Free.

2) No, we donot export tapes.

And that's why NW is not aware of change... You could use nsrjb command for that too. I used that for 7.3.2 and it worked fine for me.

3) I have gone through the manual a number of times...

First make upgrade as early version has some quirks with it. Then read manual again and pay attention to what -II and -HE do. Also, I would suggest after you remove your tapes to do first reset with HvE and then inventory with IIv.

3) I have gone through the manual a number of times and have tried the steps needed to re-syncronise NW. For eg even using nsrjb -EHI does not bring the jukebox to a consistent state and it still preserves the old info.

Is there something like forced inventory that can be performed i.e. even if NW feels that the inventory is upto date it still checks for each tape in the slot and updates the info. TIA.

I removed all the media from the slots and when the library stabilized, NW behaved perfectly and was showing no media in the slots. The media was then re-loaded and inventory performed using nsrjb -I, NW displayed the correct info.
Thanks for all your help and support.
