Cleaning Issue

I have a Dell ML6000, connected to networker 7.3.2. A drive is requesting cleaning in the library interface. Networker has registered the cleaning request, but has not executed it. A valid cleaning tape exists in the cleaning spot that I specified. The last cleaning was March 1st. The cleaning interval in Networker is set for 6 months, which would be October. I don't know where that value came from, perhaps the default for Networker. I was wondering, since Networker isn't performing a cleaning operation, is the cleaning interval overriding the request from the drive? If so, can I just change the interval to 3 months, or is there a way to tell Networker to clean anytime the drive requests it?

I would suggest to you leave drive cleaning to be handled by hardware itself.

I think NW should intercept cleaning requests via CDI and execute those, but I haven't been using that for years so I would need to do some RTM to figure out how it works now. Anyway, unless you have special reason for it, have cleaning managed by library.

So does that mean I can jsut uncheck the "Cleaning Required" checkbox? And at that point the responsibility lies with the tape drive / library?

Yes. If I remember correctly your library is actually IBM model and there should be two partitions inside - one which is SYSTEM and second one which NW is using. Cleaning cartdrige should reside (be owned) by SYSTEM one and cleaning management should be enabled at library level I believe.

Thank you for your help. I went back and read through the manual, and I see that I made a mistake when I initially partitioned the library. I put all of the slots into the partition, and didn't leave one out for cleaning. I've corrected that. Now I've got an issue with it not recognizing the cleaning tape properly, but that's an issue for Dell. While I've got them on the phone, I'll ask them who they recommend assinging the cleaning duties to. Of course they'll say the tape drive :)
