What kind of data are you saving to tape? Database, filesystems?

Are you using any compression directive? Are you using any other soft/hard method of compression? Have you applied hardware compression on your Powerloader? Some data just can not be compressed and if any of your data are already compressed then you will not see further reduction in data size even if you using compression.

I'm backing up mostly file systems with one CAD server which uses Oracle for database management. The other is a Lotus Domino server.

No, I was unaware that I could use compression directives. Through previous experiences with Veritas Backup Exec, I was under the impression that Networker offered software compression by default. Hardware compression is enabled on the Powerloader. I do understand that some data cannot be compressed any further however the backup was able to store as much as 290GB of data on one tape where as now, it barely manages 200GB.
