Cross Platform File Transfer

Hello, I am confused about something that Networker apparently does not offer.

Networker handles backups for UNIX and Windows systems and all the files are backed up on our SAN using Networker.

Our Networker Server is running on Windows 2008 R2.

How and Why can Networker not then recover files from it's own hard disk (that were from a UNIX system)

TO a Windows host...such as the backup server that already has the files backed up.

Why is something as important as Cross Platform Recoverability NOT included in this enterprise class product?

Hi,

Cross-platform recoverability not being supported means that the source and destination of the recovery operation need to be the same platform.  The Operating System of the NetWorker server is not relevant to this.

I paste here an extract from the NetWorker Administration guide which lists the limitations of directed recoveries.

"

Client restrictions for directed recoveries
The destination client in a directed recovery can be any NetWorker client subject to
these guidelines:
General restrictions:
◆ The source and destination clients must be of the same platform (UNIX-to-UNIX
or Microsoft Windows-to-Microsoft Windows).
◆ The source and destination clients must use the same type of file system (for
example, UXFS-to-UXFS, NTFS-to-NTFS).
◆ The administering host must be a client of the NetWorker server. The
administering host is the host from which the graphical user interface is
displayed.
◆ If the administering client is neither the source nor the destination client, it need
not have the same platform and type of file system as the other clients.

"

Does this clear up the confusion?

regards,

Bobby
