Data Domain Experience/Experiment
Hello
I tested Data Domain and I found some weird things, but first what I think is normal and you should know,
but nobody mention it. I tested VTL and Boost technology.
What is normal:
First backups are slow, because there are a lot of writes to the disks. The advantages of deduplication, doesn't happened
at first time, it begins only second time. It is good to know you will not achive the numbers on the slide on your first backup
if you perform a test on the customer side :-).
This is weird:
I backup first on VTL drives, it was slow. Then the following backups were very fast. We were satisfied with these results.
Then I start to test the Boost backups to the DD with the same data!
And the first backup was also slow. Then the following backups were fast again.
I assume, the first backup should be fast too, because the data was already on the DD!?
Have you got any idea, why was the first backup slow?
Unfortunately I cannot check the written data on the box, and I cannot compare this. It will tell us
more. If you got a chance to test this, please let me know the results.

Thanks Zoltan.
Interesting testing for sure. I will speak with the team and see what we can do to validate your findings. We'll get back to you in a bit.
Cheers,
Steve
