/backup is your DataDomain space which for store backup data,
5236.5GB is your total space in your Data Domain,
you can share /backup as NAS share, but it's depend on what you want to use DataDomian, I heard some guys use DataDomain as NAS device. But DataDomain is the backup device, not production NAS device. There has weakness when you treat it as NAS...
and pre-comp is the original data which not compressed before you move it to DD, means you have backup 42264.9GB data to datadomain, but acctruelly only took 4601.7GB space in DataDomain, almost the 10x compression ratio
I need correct my word, the DataDomain is a deduplicate device, not the backup device, all functional is based on de-deplication. 5236.5GB is total space in DD.
you can check it with GUI and CLI,
GUI: Hardware-Storage-overview or disks
CLI:
#filesys show space
display the space available to , and used by , file system resources
I support what you think, it's really confuse. at least there is no explaination in Data Domain course book.
it only said
#filesys show space display the space available to ,and used by,file system resources.
but if you can compare the totally space, you can see the /backup
is same as totally space
might be we can wait for DD expert explain this .
and for second question, I guess the DD cannot know how many data will come into the DD, so it only show "-",but it know how many data has already came into it, so it show the number in the "used GiB" .
I understand it better now. Just to verify if I understand you correctly, I have 2 following questions.
1. In any circumstances, for the row of "/backup: pre-comp - 206.2 - - -", there will be only one meaningful value in it, which is under "Used GiB", any other value will be always "-". Am I right?
2. > /backup: post-comp Display the amount of total physical disk space available for data,
If "/backup: post-comp..." display the amount of total physical disk space, what if I wanted to create my own share called "/whatever"? Can I create such share, if can, where can I create it on, since all space has been taken by /backup?
Great! with your help, I much better understand this question now.
What reasons the share name is changed to /data/col1 in new version of DD? and why specificillay they use /data/col1, especially where "col1" is coming from?
I promise, this is going be my last question in this thread. Thank you!
On same note.. how do you create partitions on DataDomain ? logical or physical partitions. No one seems to have an answer to this except Mtree - this is just a directory which manages permissions on folders or directories... Is this all Data Domain capable in regards to disk partitioning ?
There is no disk partitioning as with classic OS (when it comes to backup volume that is) as DDOS uses disk volume in such way that it covers whole volume available (similar to OneFS or Ontap if you want). Such layout is fits the best DDOS and what it does.

Hi,
Thanks for your message.
Is 5236.5GB the total space in DD, or a part of it, the size of /backup share which is created on DD?
Are there any other commands to show me the entire space allocation of this DD?
Thanks again!

Hi jlim7,
I am sorry, but I am a slow man.
what about /backup then? as I understand, it is a created share, does that mean the share was created by using the entire DD size?
Also, "pre-comp" under "Size GiB" should be always "-" in any DD when you run filesys show space, is that correct? and why?
Thanks again!

Check also "filesys show compression" - it will give more numbers which will make more sense overall to you
