ESX Networker backup fails - Connection refused

We are trying to get an ESX 3.0.1 server to backup. Server is behind firewall.

Networker 7.2 error message:
clientname:/boot save: RPC warning: RPC cannot make a procedure call: Create failed: Remote system error - Connection refused

We have opened TCP incoming ports 7937, 7938, 10001-30000 as per Powerlink solution esg 75228 onthe client via the Virtual Console GUI 2.0. On the ESX client command line: cfg -firewall -q (query of firewall) we do not see these ports listed.

Help Pkease!

When you check fw log for what ports do you see drops? Also, move to 7.2.2 (jumbo) as 7.2 did have some issues related to ports too.

Debra,

please check the software compatibility guide, esx3 is only supported on NW73 and higher. It can work for backups (although apperently not for you), but we have experienced severe issues restoring these backups!

Can you tell me when you refer to the restore of the OS (ESX operating system) or the VMFS-3 file systems that experience problems? And what kind of problems have you seen?
Can you also tell me if the upgrade to NW7.3 from 7.2 is problematic or near impossible if done by the customer?

Hi,

networker restores experienced semaphore timeouts when restoring required multiple volumes. Only when we restored the OS (in this case windows) from a single volume, AFTER upgrading the client software to 7.3.1, did it succeed. But not from a backup spanning multiple volumes.

Upgrade is fairly straight-forward. Try using 7.3.2 jumbo, we have problems with lower versions.
