Hi Radwan,

You dont need to install anything else apart from Networker. The NetWorker software automatically backs up AD as a component of the SYSTEM

STATE or VSS SYSTEM BOOT save set. An AD backup or restore includes the AD log files, database, patch files, and expiry token.

Hi Arun,

I have windows 2008 acting as AD , but when i browse the system to selec the saveset i can not detect any "system state" ?  in earlier verisons of windows we used to select the "system state" to do bakcup for the active directory.

in windows 2008 AD we should select "VSS SYSTEM BOOT"  ? does it includes AD log files, database, patch files, and expiry token ?

Thanks and best regards,

Radwan

Hi Radwan,

You can mention the saveset as ALL which includes all the drives and all VSS components. Else mention the drive which is required and explicitely mention the VSS savesets. VSS SYSTEM BOOT, VSS SYSTEM FILESET, VSS SYSTEM SERVICES, VSS USER DATA, VSS OTHER.

With Windows 2003 you could do saveset System State:\ and put VSS:*=off in the save operations field. I used to use it on my DC.

Not sure about Windows 2008 since it is built more around VSS than 2003.

Regarding backing up Server 2008 with NetWorker, you have to mind, that NetWorker can't do a DR (disaster recovery) recover of Server 2008 as can be done for Server 2003. More information on this is in this esg109074 here:

https://solutions.emc.com/emcsolutionview.asp?id=esg109074

Other backup products have solved this issue some time ago. Avamar is one of those products, but NetWorker does not have it on the agenda this year as far as I know.

You can't do it as MS changed game rules.  But you can use VSS DISASTER RECOVER, right?

Hi Joka

The PL describes that the recoveries are only applicable if the OS is not reinstalled. How if hardware is replaced and/or OS reinstalled...usually this is the typical scenarios and from backup need to get back to last good config after the server  is up and online....that cant be done based on PL explanation?
