Hi Dima,

what type of backup are you talking about?

As you know there are 3 type of backups for Hyper-V with NMM:

Type of backup Includes
Disaster recovery backup for Hyper-V server Does not include virtual machines and Initial Store.
Federated Hyper-V image level backup of Hyper-V clusters Includes virtual machines which are stored on clustered shared volumes.
Hyper-V image level backup of stand-alone Hyper-V servers Includes all virtual machines and Initial Store.

So I would suggest you first to check out the documentation and decide the best approach for your Hyper-V backup.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Carlos,

Thank you for your reply.

I have go all over the Documentation a few times already.

For the Begining I would like to do a Backup for stand alone Hyper-V server, I mean only the VM Geusts of this server.

I also wish to do a GRL Backup for those VM Geusts.

The Backup that I already did is Backup To Disk (not DataDomain or Avamar, Local Disk) and I did a full backup.

This way I got a GRL option funcation. But when i tried to do a incremental Backup it always turned into a full backup.

My problem is that I do not want to Backup each day a 1TB of VM Geusts.  I want to do a Daily Backup (this backup will be incremental), and in the weekend I will do a Weeky backups that will be Full, How can I make it run?

Hi Mustafa,

Thank you for your reply,

So if I have an Hyper-V Server and the VM Geusts are in size of 1 TB, I need to backup each day a 1 TB? for a daily backup.

Maybe I can do a block level backup?  if yes how can I do it?

Thanks Dima

Hi Dima,

Why the Size is 1 TB? Is it because you have Database application? If yes, then you need to configure application backups with NMM installed within the virtual machine operating system. You need to:

1- Install NMM on the Windows physical host to backup the Operating System Saveset(s) of the vm

2- Install NMM on each vm that run MSSQL, Exchange, SharePoint, etc.. to backup the DB

Mustafa

Hi Mustafa,

Thank you for your reply.

One of the servers is File Server, and there is an SQL Server, and there are more Applications servers, that I need to backup as file server.

If I wanted to backup the physical server I will use the Disaster Recovery saveset, that does not use NMM. (Networker Client for Windows)

If I want to backup a SQL, Exchange, SharePoint Server I will use the NMM Client to Backup the Applications side and Networker Client for Windows to backup the OS, because the NMM does not support it.

But we have some servers that need to be backed up as File server I want to do it with NMM and not install on each VM A Client of Networker Client for Windows.

Also its easier to work with NMM in Hyper-V instead of install the client on each VM, ever time that I will build a new one.

I need to make a daily backups, but I does not want to backup each day 1 TB.

Thanks Dima

Hi Dima,

You can use NMM to backup all the scenarios you mentioned:

1.- Disaster Recovery

2.- File System

3.- Exchange

4.- SharePoint

5.- SQL

6.- Hyper-V

For Disaster Recovery you would be using the regular NW client installed before NMM, but in that case you wouldn't be using nsrsnap_vss_save command (snapshot backups) but regular save.exe instead.

You just need to understand when to use NMM to backup the Hyper-V environment and when to use it to backup host applications.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Dima,

The suggestion of installing NMM on those servers hosting applications such Exchange etc, is to avoid backing up such huge amount of data through Hyper-V backup, which only supports full level, but for example for Exchange backups you can run incremental backups using NMM.

For clients running just OS, and no Application, you can either back it up through Hyper-V or install NW client on it.

The advantage of installing the client is that you will be able to run incremental backups at file system level, and if you back it up through Hyper-V then you will be able to run only full backups for that VM.

Let me know if you need any further information.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Carlos,

Thank you for your response.

I know that when I need to Backup an application like Exchange, SQL etc. I need to use NMM, but when I need to backup a server that does not have application like Exchange, SQL etc. what sould i do? to Install Netwoker Client on each VM?

Before, when we have only physical servers, we install on each physical server a networker client and if there was an applications we install NMM. and on a daily backup we used incremental backup, and on the weekly we did a full backup.

Now we have Hyper-V server, and I doses not want to install the networker client on each VM, only when i have application I will install the NMM. but I still want to do an incremental backup on a daily basis.

If as Mustafa said that Incremental backup does not supported on the Hyper-V Saveset? I would like to know if it will be supported?

Thanks

Dima

Hi Carlos,

Maybe you know if it will be supported?

Thanks Dima

Hi Dima,

I'm sorry but I don't really have that information.

What I know is that NMM 2.4 SP1 was recently released and it doesn't support incremental backups for Hyper-V either.

If I get any new information I'll let you know.

Thank you,

Carlos

Hello,

A short update, I just spoke to EMC today, (16 May 2013).

There is NO plans to support INC backups of Hyper-V in the NMM 3.0 release so I guess we have to wait a bit longer.

Only supported way is to get an INC backup is to install NMM on the Virtual Machine and backup Disks and System state.
