This Primarily depends on your requirements

- The kind of clients in your environment

- Location of the clients and the appliance

- consider DD lets the whole data travel over the WAN/LAN and avamar does only the unique data

I would strongly recommend discussing your requirement with an EMC REP so he/she can put all the factors on the table and suggest a solution

Avamar performs source deduplication and Data Domain performs target deduplication.

source deduplication means before backup data is sent from Avamar clients to Avamar Server, it is deduplicated first on Avamar clients. This can severely reduce the amount of data transmission across network. This is especially useful when backup clients and Avamar Server are in different sites. Particularly, Avamar is best for Vmware backup.

Target deduplication means all backup data will be sent to Data Domain and then the data is dedupliced on Data Domain. Data Domain provides high throughputs but has higher CPU and RAM requirements.
