Jukebox error: scsi command MODE_SENSE failed
I had an old Networker server 7.2.1, with qla2340 on McData switch, STK SL500, 2 drives HP Ultrium LTO2.
Now I want install a new Networker server on new W2K3 64bit platform, QLA2462, same TL, same fc switch, then I'll dismiss old server.
I installed on new server hba driver, tape driver, and I can see on San Surfer and on Windows Device Manager TL drives. Inquire works.
I'm now trying to setup TL under Windows 2003, but jbconfig isn't working for me.
It fails with "Jukebox error: scsi command MODE_SENSE failed".
----
Details:
RSM disabled
hba driver 9.1.4.15 for QLA2462 (64bit)
HP LTO Ultrium-2 driver 1.5.0 (I tried with 1.0.5 too) 64 bit
Medium changer unknown for Windows
I tried to change HBA
I tried to disable Tape driver and then run jbconfig
I tried to run jbconfig and option 4
Old Networker 7.2.1 on different server runs with jbconfig
Networker 7.4.2 on different server runs with jbconfig (on W2K3 32-bit)!!!!
I worked with just one Networker server running at once, other were shutting down.
INQUIRE works

SJISN results (doesn't work):

JBCONFIG results (fails):

C:\>jbconfig
1) Configure an AlphaStor/SmartMedia Jukebox.
2) Configure an Autodetected SCSI Jukebox.
3) Configure an Autodetected NDMP SCSI Jukebox.
4) Configure an SJI Jukebox.
5) Configure an STL Silo.
6) Configure a Microsoft Removable Storage Jukebox.
What kind of Jukebox are you configuring? [1] 2

thanks for your quick answer. You are rigth, there are a lot of reasons (I walked through HP, SUN and so on forums). However I can exclude clear door or tape problems, because I tried to run jbconfig, sjisn, mount, umount, inventory on the same library through different Networker server 7.4.2 with 32-bit (shutting down the first one before, of course).

There could be several reasons for this. One which often troubles me is either the door of the library is open or there could be tapes stuck. you can try ejecting all the tapes and then reconfigure the library. It often works. Also you can refer to this solution published on powerlink. esg69905. For your reference here is the link.

SCSI >> then power down server and library and re-connect all cables and terminator. try again.
Fibre >> unplug and re-discover the lib. Make sure that you have vendor specific drives for the jukebox the O/S version.
Sort of remedial, but the rebotics isn't responding to NSR right.
Do changers and jbverify work?
Also try to the sji... utilities to verify communication to the robotics of the thing.
This will tell where you are failing at.

my connection is switched fabric through qlogic hba.
- I used right drivers (hba qlogic and HP LTO ultrium-2).
- I tried to unplug and plug again
- I issued sji commands: same error. They didn't work
- Windows system and inquire show correct output
Please let me say that the same connection parameters and Networker version on W2K3 32-bit worked succesfully.
I thinks that something in Windows environment don't permit MODE_SENSE command to reach library.

SL500, NW is windows server, and error is MODE_SENSE.
you must install autochanger driver, which could download from sun siteweb, also
i can email to you this driver if you need.

I tried to configure the same jukebox with:
- another W2K3 server 64-bit with QLA2312
- same hba driver
- same patching level of OS
It run!
I closed problem with these assumptions:
- somethings on hba or driver of not working server aren't compatible with MODE_SENSE scsi command. The not working server was an HS21 with hba QMC2462 (mezzanine adapters)
- somethings on OS of not working server isn't compatible with MODE_SENSE scsi command.
This is the end of thread.
