It should be possible to divide the physical library up in two partitions, one with the LTO3 drives and a number of slots, and the other with LTO4 drives and the rest of the slots.

When you configure them in networker, make sure you dont get the tape drives mixed up between your virtual libaries(partitions), so keep an eye on the wwn's.

Is there anything can be done from Networker without doing any changes in the SL8500 libary hardware.if i dint make any changes to the current configuration of SL8500 can i configure the logical libary through NEtworker 7.5.2 using JB config. Please advise

Pallu,

In the original post you do not explain why you think you need to configure two separate libraries? In the existing setup, you should be able to link pools to drives to ensure you only use the relevant tape in the correct drive type?

As this is an ACSLS library I think you can configure two different libraries (at least at the moment I cannot think of a reason why not). The number of drives are defined when creating the jukebox and volumes are added by specific command (nsrjb -a -T) which will allow you to separate out the volumes. The control port would be the same ACSLS server so you should be able to use only 1 SSI and mini process, but it is possible to direct these processes to another port on the ACSLS server.

The only think I can think of is that you would need 2 auto-changer licenses as opposed to one. You should not need to link pools to devices to ensure you get LTO4 volumes in LTO 4 drives only as the jukebox definitions are separate. Also this type of configuration would more normally be seen using AlphaStor within the environment. EMC are about to release a new version of AlphaStor soon (version 4.0) which is free and customer configurable - this would be a better fit to what you are attemping to do.

Thanks willim,

but i wat on thing can i configure directly as below please correct me,

1)I will start configuring for the lto3 drives seperatly as one libary using jbconfig command and it will ask for no off drives i will give as 12 as i have 12 lto3 drives.and once the drives are added and libry is configured ...it will ask do you want to configure one more libray and i will give yes...and again it will ask for acsls server name i will give same and will ask how many drives ,i will give as 5 and will configure the same.

But one thing does any thing ned to be configured fin ACSLS or SL8500 libary befor this configuration.or simply can i start configuring the libray..

Please advise,

Pallu,

I have not attempted this before, so all my comments are "theoretical". ACSLS only acts as the robotic arm as such manipulating the tapes top/from the drives/CAP for us so there is nothing within ACSLS to change. It already knows about the drives and tape cartridges.

Within NetWorker you will have to: -

1. Know the drive relationships between ACSLS address and device path on the relative Storage node.

2. Know the tape volumes or ranges to add to the jukebox once configured for both LTO3 and LTO4 volumes known in NW and "scratch" i.e. unlabelled.

3. You will need two licenses authorised or at least one other in eval mode (installing a temporary code) but it will stop working after 45 days unless you purchase and authorise the license.

Please ensure you do a bootstrap backup prior to dropping and reconfiguring the existing jukebox or stop the software and copy the res folder so you can quickly return to the existing configuration should an problem be seen afterwards. Also I would stop backups until you have tested loads, unloads, labels etc and you are sure its working as expected.

Hi wllim,

Can i configure 2 libray on the same server.means.I will configure 1st lkibary as to pick lto3 tapes and 2nd as to pick lto4 drives.

I have libray SL8500 attached from SAN to Backup server.I need to configure 2 logical library in the same server.

Please let me know:-)

Pallu,

Yes I cannot see a reason why you cannot do this, however I have not actually done this myself. The volumes for an ACSLS library are added by running nsrjb -a -T commands not by inventory of the jukebox.

Currently I cannot think of any reason why you could not do this but please consider my previous comments
