networker backup_aux_files folder on data domain
Hi All,
I have an elementary question on networker savesets. My understanding is that a saveset consists of two files named after the long sid. However when listing backups on a DD there is additional folder called backup_aux exists that has a sub-folder named after the long sid which has another file in there. Any ideas what this additional folder/file is for? The ask for this question is that I have customer who plans to apply retention lock on individual files to match the retention date.
Thanks,
-e

I actually cannot answer the question - it could well be that this AFTD subdir is version dependent.
However, I find the idea itself weird - if you do not trust NW to care about the retention properly, how would you trust in its backups?

not so much about trusting networker. it's more to prevent someone intentionally or accidentally expiring/deleting backups.

Nobody has to fiddle with these directories. Just prevent the general access to these directories.
After a while you will have so many save sets that I bet it will take more time to find them than to 'lock' them.
Other solutions would be:
- use DDBoost instead of AFTD devices so that only the registered backup user could access it.
But I cannot believe he would even be able to find a directory.
- or clone the save sets to tape and put it into a safe for additional safety/redundancy.

This is actually Data Domain boost. The mtree folder is mapped on a Windows server for browsing/listing of the savesets. Backups are backed up to a local DD via boost and then cloned to a remote DD and retained for 1 year. The retention lock requirement is for the cloned backups.
