Networker POC Vs NetBackup
Morning All,
We are currently using Netbackup + Data Domain in our primary site and this is replicated to a DR site. We have a geo clustered master server in the 2 locations. We are looking at potentially replacing the netbackup element with Networker.
I am trying to formulate the requirements for a POC and I want to look at: (All Netbackup Nomenclature I'm afraid!)
Backup and restore servers
o Physical
o Windows
o Linux
o Redhat
o Solaris
o Sparc
o Virtual
o Windows
o Linux
Centralised Master server - looking to bring more sites online so want to have a central master server in DR site and everything connects in, a hub and spoke configuration.
Media Server backing up in geographic location - ensure the media servers in site a backup clients in site a not any other site
Restoring in different site
Storage units - how do they work?
Archive to tape
NDMP on Celerra
VMWare
Riverbed reduction rates
Building of servers
Tape Management
Integration with DD
Avamar integration
Reporting - DPA integration
Speed of restores
Integration with other EMC products
Bare metal restore
Database Agents
Setting up scheduling incl Daily, Weekly, Monthly Yearly policies
LDAP Authentication
Self Service Restore
Is there anything else I should look to test?
Is there anything I should really look at as it's not the same in Networker
Anywhere Netbackup is better than Networker or vice versa?
Many Thanks
Matt

Bobby - Thank you. We are already heavily engaged with an EMC sales team. I want to make sure that I cover all the bases when comparing the products

My first question would be what is your reason for wanting to change to Networker? For many customers moving Netbackup to Networker or vice versa there is a belief that changing software will resolve all problems they have been experiencing, whereas the problems more often stem from networking issues or a badly configured system. The other common reason for making the move is moving to one solution provider or a global standard. Knowing why you are making the transition makes it a lot easier to give advice!

Hi Matt,
That's a lot of different topics. If you would like to send me a private message with your details, I can have one of our EMC sales team contact you about this and he should be able to give you all of the info you need. Just click on my name and you will see on the right under 'Actions' - 'send private message'.
If you want to start looking into this yourself, here's some good starting points:
NetWorker 7.6.1 Administration Guide:
http://powerlink.emc.com/km/live1/en_US/Offering_Technical/Technical_Documentation/300-011-327.pdf?
This is basically the guide on how to do everything you need to do with NetWorker and should answer a lot of your questions.
As regards the building of servers, the Installation Guide is the instructions on how to do this:
http://powerlink.emc.com/km/live1/en_US/Offering_Technical/Technical_Documentation/300-011-324.pdf?
For Avamar/NetWorker, there was a recent post on that in this forum providing good links:
https://community.emc.com/thread/113752?tstart=0
For integration with DataDomain and Avamar and tape management etc, there are White Papers and Technical Notes at the following location on Powerlink:
Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > Software ~ J-O ~ Documentation > NetWorker Family > White Papers
Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > Software ~ J-O ~ Documentation > NetWorker Family > Technical Notes
As regards, NetWorker versus NetBackup, I'm afraid I don't know anything about that but the EMC Sales guys would be able to help you with that or someone else on the forum might be able to enlighten you on some of the advantages or each....
Let us know if you don't find what you want in there or if you need more information on a particular area. Otherwise, send me a private message and I'll have someone call you and talk you through what you need to know.
