Running a NetWorker server in a VM is supported. The only issue is that you cannot have a tape device directly attached to the ESX server as there is a VMWare issue with SCSI isolation which means that this is not supported. You also need to be careful to assign sufficient resources to the VM.

hi Scott,
moving NSR indices is IMHO the best strategy, not P2V.
do not only use "symbolic links" for the new .../nsr/index,
but make use of the "index path" field within the client resource as well
