Yes, it is true... you will need to take that path. 7.2.x is really really old in terms of what has happened since - I would suggest to make additional jump to latest 7.6SP5 before NW8 as well. NW8 brings many changes and before you hit it, you wish to be sure that everything is in order at that point.
Actually not sure if you can go straight from 7.2 to 7.5 or 7.6.
For sure you cannot go to NW 8
In 7.5.x there were some changes in the licensing model, and for that reason you need to go first to NW 7.5.x, get a License upgrade, and then continue going to 7.6.5 and eventually NW 8.

You need an upgrade code to go to 7.5.x. Not sure about going to 8.x
