NetWorker Upgrade from v7.6.2 to v8

I am looking into upgrading our current version of NetWorker from v7.6.2 to v8. Do I immediately have to update all of my clients as well to v8 or will all of the back up jobs continue to process? Thanks

Jason,

No the clients can be upgrade after the initial upgrade of Storage nodes (done first) and then NetWorker server. The NetWorker Procedure Generator will be able to assist you with the process. And can be downloaded from Powerlink or Support.emc.com

Anyone who has upgraded to NW8, does it know if NW8 client will run on Windows 2000 clients?  I have bunch of legacy clients which I have to keep on that version (due to application) and I also have one which has to use NMO 4.5 on HPUX (due to Oracle 9).  I wonder how this combinations will work against NW8.

All of my clients are 7.6.2 or higher. I just don't want to be in a rush to upgrade 50+ clients as soon as the NetWorker Server upgrade is completed to v8. I want the backup jobs to continue to run normally with the 7.6.2 clients. I would rather wait until off hours to upgrade the clients.

I think this may be the answer from the NetWorker v8 release guide. Page 201

A NetWorker server does not support a NetWorker client running release 7.2.x or earlier.

Well, 7.2.x is really old - that would be last Legato version before EMC started reshaping the code.

Hi Hrvoje

According to SCG, Win2k is not supported

In alignment with Microsoft’s end of support for Windows 2000, NetWorker releases no longer support the Windows 2000 platform.

NMO4.5 only supports Oracle 9.2 on OpenVMS

Hi Thierry,

I know how this applies to client - my concern is how server handles sessions from older clients. For example, I assume above what you quoted applies in case someone wants to install NW8 on win2k as client (I believe, at least in my case, you can't install 7.6.x neither).  Obviously, win2k has to be somewhat supported (think of long term backups and sudden wish to restore or VM backup).  I'm quite sure once server software is tested, it is not tested for all older releases so I wonder if stream from such older clients with older NW release will do any harm or I will have to allocate legacy server for all legacy stuff I have.
