Networker won't find library and third Tape device.

Tonight (2015-12-03) we got a power cut in our secondary datacenter. The backupserver and our tape library wen't totally offline and after that we are having some problems.

When the server first came online again i could see our tape library but two tape devices (Tape0 & Tape1) was in service mode, the third tape device (Tape2) was not.. I tried to recover some files from tape but i didn't work.

I decided to remove the library and add it again. I have several times before removed and add the library in Networker without any problems but now it seems that Networker only find two devices which is Tape0 and Tape1, Tape2 device won't show up and not the library itself.

Here is and example of error when i scan for a new devices:

Warning The \\.\Tape2 is either skipped as requested (due to hardware problem) or no longer connected to the storage node. torsdag 22:05:28 media

I have also tried the Inquire command were i only see two devices and no Jukebox.

The backup server is running Windows Server 2012 R2 and device manager i can only see 2 tape devices. Should be three. We are running EMC Networker 8.1.1.3.

I really need help with this. Why won't it find our Tape library?

We use IBM Scalar i500 as library.

Kind regards,

Anthon

I am pretty sure that "library management console" is the operator's panel on the library itself.

Don't forget that it is all about SCSI (no matter what the transport media is). So you must first ensure that you see all SCSI devices which you can only check with a SCSI command (INQUIRE).

So the procedure is

  - Verify that INQUIRE sees all devices

  - Verify that the OS sees all devices

  - Do not try to configure NW before the second step runs successfully.

Hello anthon.hassel ,

If the device manager is not able to see the 3rd drive, then you cannot expect NetWorker to configure this drive.

Please use the library management console to check the missing drive, if all is OK there then the next to check is if the zone on the fabric switch is still intact.

I would recommend you do a graceful reboot of the tape library and then scan for device on the device manager to check if you can see the 3rd drive on it.

Hello Crazyrov.

Ok I understand. What do you mean by using "library management console"? We don't use a dedicated fibrechannel switch.

We have two Qlogic fibrechannel cards with two ports each. The tape library is directly connected to the server. I have tried other cables and mixed the ports on the server and it's getting pretty obvious that the third tape device is broken or something..

The most frustrating right now is that Networker doesn't find the library.

All your help is much appreciated!

Kind regards,

Anthon

Hello Bingo!

Thank you for your answer!

Here is the result from the Inquire command:

                                           Can Encrypt & Decrypt

3 Disk, 2 Tape, 1 Unknown Device Type, Total: 6

I assmue that the 1 Unknown device is our stage disk which is multiple disk in RAID6. I understand that we are missing the last tape device here. Shouldn't the library be seen here also (Jukebox)?

In device manager in Windows i only see two tape devices, i don't remember ever seen the tape library here before..

How does this really work, i understand the direct connection between the server and tape devices but how is networker searching for a whole library?

The jukebox should appear in both

  - the INQUIRE command                         and

  - In the Device Manager - Medium Changer Devices ... at least as 'Unknown Media Changer'

because the library is also controlled via SCSI.

Here the appropriate lines from our installation:

scsidev@b.t.l:GRAU ITL-5000l   1.7 |Autochanger (Jukebox),
                                       S/N: 0002510007
                                       ATNN=GRAU ITL-5000l   0000010007

I assume that the FC connection to the 3rd drives is also being used as the connection to the Robotic arm. Have you tried rebooting the tape library gracefully yet ?

Since you have i500, can you go to its web console and check health status?  Also, do you use IO blade inside if yes is it one or two?

Second, perhaps whole initiating didn't go well, so shut down both NW box and library.  Leave them like this for minute or two and then start (power up) library first.  Do not start backup server machine before library is not done with its own sequence of startup (may take up to 10-15 minutes).  Then start server.  Then check from OS what you see.  NW certainly won't see what OS can't see (since you use IBM LTO, I suspect you use IBM drivers and you might also have some IBM tools to probe this further if not visible on the system from OS level - though they won't be able to do much if light is not there).

When you exchanged cable, did you reboot the box after and did you check if order of drives (their serial number) has changed?  Was that moving as well?

Hello guys!

Sorry for my late answer! The problem is solved now.. We had a failing tape device that was set to "Control Path" in the i500 library. If i have understand it right "Control Path" is like other word for primary device. Once i changed the control path to another tape device the library wen't available in Windows and Networker.

Thank for all the help and answers!

Kind Regards,

Anthon
