NMM : failed to create place holder file ????

Hi Pier,

Can you please let us know the configuration of the client? Is this stand-alone SharePoint server or is it a distributed farm?

Anyway I think the main issue is with the saveset SYSTEM COMPONENTS:\ so please let us know the configuration of the client (backup command, Application Information, and Group configuration)..

Also please run vssadmin list writers in the client to check that all writers (specially System Writer) is present, and in status [1].

Also please run vssadmin list shadows, and ensure that, if you have set "Serverless backup" as snapshot policy, then no shadows should be present, if so please manually delete them using DISKSHADOW command.

Stop NetWorker services on the client including Replication ManagerAgentPS, delete /nsr/tmp and start all services again,

Then please set only the saveset SYSTEM COMPONENTS:\ and run a new backup, If it fails please render nmm.raw on the client and paste in here the output of the last backup.

If I have only C:\inetpub and SYSTEM COMPONENTS, no problem. As soon as I add the Sharepint stuff as you can see in the client definition, the backup starts to fail.

The problem is the configuration of SharePoint:

A remote dependency has been detected.  Please create a client entry on the NetWorker server for the remote component(s) and ensure a full backup has been performed.  Please consult the product documentation for further details.

I don't know if you had the chance to read the documentation, but in order to backup SharePoint farm you need to backup all SharePoint components and services, including the SQL DB's.

The error message is pretty clear, there are some components missing from the backup.

To configure SharePoint farm backup you need to do as follows:

1.- Register WSS writer in the WFE server. If SharePoint 2010 you need to do it in all WFE servers.

2.- Run nsrsnap_vss_save -v -?

3.- Check the output of the command and take a look at the dependencies. Those are the clients and savesets you need to specify, and all the clients (in case of distributed farm) need to be added into the same snapshot group.

Please note that NMM 2.3 DO NOT support anymore granular backups/restore with NMM, so forget about the MOSS stuff. You can use though Kroll Ontrack, but that is a different story.

Looks good, just ensure to run the nsrsnap_vss_save -v -? command in all servers of the farm, to be sure you are not missing any saveset.

ok,

I've checked all the systems in the farm and I have the same configuration listed by the sharepoint nodes ( apart sql server cluster ).

I'm not sure that the error related with file placeholder is related with sharepoint itself. Infact, if I backup only Sharepoint services for node zittor16apcp010 all works fine, and also if I backup only SYSTEM COMPONENTS and inetpub. Only the mix of them is failing for node 010.

It's a showstopper...

I would say to check the volumes configured on VSS, and also to retrieve more information about the OS configuration.

Is this a VM or a physical machine? If VM, are the disks configured in pass-through mode? Can you please run the following commands:

vssadmin list volumes

Also I would recommend you to run NMM Configu Checker and see the output.

Can you run the following command and attach the .xml files?:

nsrsnap_vss_save -G
