hi, when i as your said, manual configuration backup.
the following content of configuration nsrsapsv.cfg
# # This is the sample nsrsapsv.cfg file. # # This file contains settings for the NetWorker Module for SAP with # Oracle (a.k.a. NMSAP) used during scheduled backups. # # Note: Comments have a "#" in the first column. # ###########################################################################
# BR_EXEC specifies the command that nsrsapsv will execute. The BR_EXEC # parameter can be any valid brbackup or brarchive command, including # any command line options. If a username and password are required to # execute the command, they should be encrypted into this file using the # nsrsapsv -c command, rather than using the -u option in this parameter. # For more information about when the username and password are required, # and how to encrypt them into this file, see the EMC NetWorker Module # for SAP with Oracle Administrator's Guide. # This is a required parameter. # # BR_EXEC=brbackup BR_EXEC=brbackup
# ORACLE_HOME specifies # value of ORACLE_HOME for the Oracle instance that will be backed up. # This is a required parameter. # # ORACLE_HOME=/export/home/oracle/product/8.1.5 ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/ZEP/102_64
# SAPDATA_HOME should be set to the value of the # root directory of the SAP database files. # This is a required parameter. # # SAPDATA_HOME=d:\orant\CER\ SAPDATA_HOME=/oracle/ZEP/
# NLS_LANG is a required environment variable. The format should be # LANGUAGE_TERRITORY.CHARACTERSET # Refer to your Oracle documentation for more information of this variable. # # NLS_LANG = AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII NLS_LANG = AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8
# SAP_BIN specifies the path to where the BrTools executables are installed. # This should also be where the backint binary resides. This path will be # added to the PATH environment variable so that the BrTools and backint # executables can be found. # This is a required parameter. # # SAP_BIN=/usr/sap/SAP/SYS/exe/run SAP_BIN=/usr/sap/ZEP/SYS/exe/run
# SAPBACKUP specifies the temporary directory for the backup logs should go. # BrTools and backint both use this directory to store their temporary log # files. On UNIX systems, the default for this is $ORACLE_HOME/sapbackup. # On Windows, this is a required parameter. On UNIX, this parameter is only # required if the default is not $ORACLE_HOME/sapbackup. # # SAPBACKUP=d:\orant\CER\sapbackup SAPBACKUP=/oracle/ZEP/sapbackup
# ORACLE_SID specifies the SID of the Oracle instances to be backed up. If # this parameter is specified here, backint wil use the value of this # parameter for the Oracle SID. If this parameter is not specifed here, the # Oracle SID will be obtained from the save set name you entered when this # client was configured in the NetWorker software. For example, if you # entered backint:SAP:online_backup for the save set name during client # configuration and you do not specify a value for ORACLE_SID in this file, # then SAP will be used for the Oracle SID This parameter is only required # if you want to override the one specified by the save set name. # # ORACLE_SID=SAP ORACLE_SID=ZEP
# If RMAN is used for backing up database files, set NSR_SAP_USING_RMAN_OPTION # to 'TRUE' by uncommenting the following line. # # NSR_SAP_USING_RMAN_OPTION=TRUE
# ORACLE_BIN specifies where the Oracle binaries are located. This path will # be appended to the PATH environment variable so that all Oracle binaries can # be found if needed. The default for this will be $ORACLE_HOME/bin. # This parameter is only required if the Oracle binaries are not located in # $ORACLE_HOME/bin. # # ORACLE_BIN
# SAPARCH, SAPREORG, SAPTRACE, and SAPCHECK are SAP environment variables that # are normally set in your SAP environment on Windows platforms. These # environment variables may be required for brbackup to run properly on Windows. # If these variables are not set on your Windows system, or if they need to be # overridden, they should be set here. # # SAPARCH=d:\orant\CER\saparch # SAPREORG=d:\orant\CER\sapreorg # SAPTRACE=d:\orant\CER\saptrace # SAPCHECK=d:\orant\cer\sapcheck
# PATH is used to add more search paths to the environment. Anything specified # here will be appended to the PATH environment variable. You may specify as # many PATH variables as you desire. You may specify multiple search paths, # using either one of the following methods: # This is an optional parameter. # # PATH=/export/home/dir1:/export/home/dir2:/home/dir1/dir2/dir3 # or # PATH=/export/home/dir1 # PATH=/export/home/dir2 # PATH=/home/dir1/dir2/dir3
# Any _path= pair. This parameter can be used to append values # to an environment variable named _path (for example, LD_LIBRARY_PATH). # If an environment variable with this name already exists, then the value # listed here will be appended to the existing value for this environment # variable. If an environment variable with this name does not exist, it will # be created. # This is an optional parameter. # # LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/export/home/oracle/product/8.1.5/lib:/usr/openwin/lib
# Any = pair. This parameter can be used to add any environment # variable named . You may specify any name=value pair. If the # environment variable specified by name already exists, then it will be # overwritten. For example: # # BR_TRACE=1 # # will set the BR_TRACE environment variable equal to 1 in your environment, # which will instruct brbackup or brarchive to print out additional trace # information. This will override any other setting for BR_TRACE. # This is an optional parameter.
# NSR_SAP_SECURE_RUN Set to "TRUE" or "FALSE". This is a Unix only parameter. It may be set # under Windows but it has no effect. # # If an encrypted username/password is used, the unencrypted password used to # run brbackup or brarchive may be visible in a ps listing while the backup is # running. Setting this parameter to "TRUE" will suppress this behaviour and # increase password security. # # NSR_SAP_SECURE_RUN=TRUE # # This is an optional parameter.

What it says is that your client could not connect to server - if using multihomed client or server, make sure proper interfaces are used (via backup server interface and storage node interface field).

Usually rc2 means not found, but it may also apply where no permissions exist. You are lucky that I'm just about to configure one SAP instance for backup so here we go... Note that values and names might be different in your case so make sure to check that first. As always, you wish to make sure to use SAP user for backup. Here we go.
First I set 2 cfg files (environment files) for DB and arch backup. I renamed mine SID to EMC here.
As you can see, the only difference between them is BR_EXEC line in terms what they use and what they do. Next, I will add username and password to it.
because I use PowerSnap in my landscape (not in this case), my template for util file has 3 lines for ps - they are not needed, but they do not hurt being there neither
you will need to set server, client and pool in util file as per your own setup
unless you are not using DD Boost, you MUST set NSR_DIRECT_ACCESS = No
Last thing, and also important, is permissions on backint and BRTools. Sometimes this is dirty business unless SAP admin didn't run saproot script. There is an article on SAP KB which states exactly how this should be (KB id escapes me now), but you will just have to trust me about following:
# cd /usr/sap/SBX/SYS/exe/run
# ll b*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 emcadm sapsys 8211864 Jan 15 2013 backint
With this in place, all I need to do is make sure backup group and clients are there:
create group just as defined in util file
place groups into pools just as defined in util file
create client for DB backup, saveset is backint:EMC and backup command is nsrsapsv -f /nsr/res/nsrsapsv_EMC_data.cfg and assign it to DB group
create client for ARCH backup, saveset is backint:EMC and backup command is nsrsapsv -f /nsr/res/nsrsapsv_EMC_arch.cfg and assign it to ARCH group
And finally, run backup.
One note; I use FQDN everywhere on my servers, but I know this is not always the case elsewhere. As a matter of fact, recently I worked on server where server and client were defined as hostname. Then I got error that server hostname and FQDN are defined (I could see it after I enabled debug in util file). It turned out that server value in util was was the one set in backup server interface value of the client itself. So, if you run multihomed environment with multiple choice, it all comes down to what you set and use. This applies only to scheduled backups.
Now, to make it more exciting, I did get an error like you:
BR0280I BRBACKUP time stamp: 2013-07-19 11.24.50
BR0057I Backup of database: EMC
BR0058I BRBACKUP action ID: belrfqnu

BR0280I BRBACKUP time stamp: 2013-07-19 11.24.53
BR0054I BRBACKUP terminated with errors
Now, I did something wrong somewhere, but I have no idea where of course. Not to waste my time, I will enable those documented lines for debug in util file and check again (debug_level = 9 and nsr_debug_msg = yes). Logs will be placed in /nsr/applogs. Now I see following:
Backint exiting at with fatal error: checking for deletion of semaphore file: Permission denied
I have no idea what this means really except that backint running as SAP user could not access semaphore (memory) files indicating some issue with permissions. At this point, this indicates to me issue on SAP side. And since I use setup which is exactly the same for all SAP instances I backup, I'm 100% sure nothing is wrong with my setup. Checking docs quickly shows:
Removed, tried again, same. OK, so SAP user has to be able to remove file owned by Oracle user. From above we see this is not possible of course. At this point I check sapadm user and see following:
emcadm 21> umask
077
Now, you wish this to be 022 and not 077. Time to walk to the SAP guys It turns out that UNIX guys created user, but failed to setup profile according to SAP wishes. After that being fixed, it works (not that both oracle and SAP user had umask set wrong)
If you wish to run it manually from the box, for DB backup you can run
brbackup -c force -u / -r initEMC_data.utl -p initEMC_data.sap
and for archive log backup:
brarchive -c force -u / -r initEMC_arch.utl -p initEMC_arch.sap
I hope this helps you configure it and get an idea of initial troubleshooting steps.
One more thing... from my experience, sapbackup folder needs read and execute writes for others in almost all SAP implementations I have seen so far - without it, you may get issues too.

You need to check in /nsr/applogs backint log for details. Eventually place debug in util file.

Remove NSR_NWPATH. Not sure why people use wizards instead of reading documentation

hi, when i as your said, manual configuration backup.
the following content of configuration nsrsapsv.cfg
#
# This is the sample nsrsapsv.cfg file.
#
# This file contains settings for the NetWorker Module for SAP with
# Oracle (a.k.a. NMSAP) used during scheduled backups.
#
# Note: Comments have a "#" in the first column.
#
###########################################################################
# BR_EXEC specifies the command that nsrsapsv will execute. The BR_EXEC
# parameter can be any valid brbackup or brarchive command, including
# any command line options. If a username and password are required to
# execute the command, they should be encrypted into this file using the
# nsrsapsv -c command, rather than using the -u option in this parameter.
# For more information about when the username and password are required,
# and how to encrypt them into this file, see the EMC NetWorker Module
# for SAP with Oracle Administrator's Guide.
# This is a required parameter.
#
# BR_EXEC=brbackup
BR_EXEC=brbackup
# ORACLE_HOME specifies
# value of ORACLE_HOME for the Oracle instance that will be backed up.
# This is a required parameter.
#
# ORACLE_HOME=/export/home/oracle/product/8.1.5
ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/ZEP/102_64
# SAPDATA_HOME should be set to the value of the
# root directory of the SAP database files.
# This is a required parameter.
#
# SAPDATA_HOME=d:\orant\CER\
SAPDATA_HOME=/oracle/ZEP/
# NLS_LANG is a required environment variable. The format should be
# LANGUAGE_TERRITORY.CHARACTERSET
# Refer to your Oracle documentation for more information of this variable.
#
# NLS_LANG = AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII
NLS_LANG = AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8
# SAP_BIN specifies the path to where the BrTools executables are installed.
# This should also be where the backint binary resides. This path will be
# added to the PATH environment variable so that the BrTools and backint
# executables can be found.
# This is a required parameter.
#
# SAP_BIN=/usr/sap/SAP/SYS/exe/run
SAP_BIN=/usr/sap/ZEP/SYS/exe/run
# SAPBACKUP specifies the temporary directory for the backup logs should go.
# BrTools and backint both use this directory to store their temporary log
# files. On UNIX systems, the default for this is $ORACLE_HOME/sapbackup.
# On Windows, this is a required parameter. On UNIX, this parameter is only
# required if the default is not $ORACLE_HOME/sapbackup.
#
# SAPBACKUP=d:\orant\CER\sapbackup
SAPBACKUP=/oracle/ZEP/sapbackup
# ORACLE_SID specifies the SID of the Oracle instances to be backed up. If
# this parameter is specified here, backint wil use the value of this
# parameter for the Oracle SID. If this parameter is not specifed here, the
# Oracle SID will be obtained from the save set name you entered when this
# client was configured in the NetWorker software. For example, if you
# entered backint:SAP:online_backup for the save set name during client
# configuration and you do not specify a value for ORACLE_SID in this file,
# then SAP will be used for the Oracle SID This parameter is only required
# if you want to override the one specified by the save set name.
#
# ORACLE_SID=SAP
ORACLE_SID=ZEP
# If RMAN is used for backing up database files, set NSR_SAP_USING_RMAN_OPTION
# to 'TRUE' by uncommenting the following line.
#
# NSR_SAP_USING_RMAN_OPTION=TRUE
# ORACLE_BIN specifies where the Oracle binaries are located. This path will
# be appended to the PATH environment variable so that all Oracle binaries can
# be found if needed. The default for this will be $ORACLE_HOME/bin.
# This parameter is only required if the Oracle binaries are not located in
# $ORACLE_HOME/bin.
#
# ORACLE_BIN
# SAPARCH, SAPREORG, SAPTRACE, and SAPCHECK are SAP environment variables that
# are normally set in your SAP environment on Windows platforms. These
# environment variables may be required for brbackup to run properly on Windows.
# If these variables are not set on your Windows system, or if they need to be
# overridden, they should be set here.
#
# SAPARCH=d:\orant\CER\saparch
# SAPREORG=d:\orant\CER\sapreorg
# SAPTRACE=d:\orant\CER\saptrace
# SAPCHECK=d:\orant\cer\sapcheck
# PATH is used to add more search paths to the environment. Anything specified
# here will be appended to the PATH environment variable. You may specify as
# many PATH variables as you desire. You may specify multiple search paths,
# using either one of the following methods:
# This is an optional parameter.
#
# PATH=/export/home/dir1:/export/home/dir2:/home/dir1/dir2/dir3
# or
# PATH=/export/home/dir1
# PATH=/export/home/dir2
# PATH=/home/dir1/dir2/dir3
# Any _path= pair. This parameter can be used to append values
# to an environment variable named _path (for example, LD_LIBRARY_PATH).
# If an environment variable with this name already exists, then the value
# listed here will be appended to the existing value for this environment
# variable. If an environment variable with this name does not exist, it will
# be created.
# This is an optional parameter.
#
# LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/export/home/oracle/product/8.1.5/lib:/usr/openwin/lib
# Any = pair. This parameter can be used to add any environment
# variable named . You may specify any name=value pair. If the
# environment variable specified by name already exists, then it will be
# overwritten. For example:
#
# BR_TRACE=1
#
# will set the BR_TRACE environment variable equal to 1 in your environment,
# which will instruct brbackup or brarchive to print out additional trace
# information. This will override any other setting for BR_TRACE.
# This is an optional parameter.
# NSR_SAP_SECURE_RUN Set to "TRUE" or "FALSE". This is a Unix only parameter. It may be set
# under Windows but it has no effect.
#
# If an encrypted username/password is used, the unencrypted password used to
# run brbackup or brarchive may be visible in a ps listing while the backup is
# running. Setting this parameter to "TRUE" will suppress this behaviour and
# increase password security.
#
# NSR_SAP_SECURE_RUN=TRUE
#
# This is an optional parameter.

OK, this is done now. Now, I only have to set utl and sap files. This are always in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs... They should also be owned by Oracle user:
Here is content for each:
Few notes about above:
Last thing, and also important, is permissions on backint and BRTools. Sometimes this is dirty business unless SAP admin didn't run saproot script. There is an article on SAP KB which states exactly how this should be (KB id escapes me now), but you will just have to trust me about following:
With this in place, all I need to do is make sure backup group and clients are there:
And finally, run backup.
One note; I use FQDN everywhere on my servers, but I know this is not always the case elsewhere. As a matter of fact, recently I worked on server where server and client were defined as hostname. Then I got error that server hostname and FQDN are defined (I could see it after I enabled debug in util file). It turned out that server value in util was was the one set in backup server interface value of the client itself. So, if you run multihomed environment with multiple choice, it all comes down to what you set and use. This applies only to scheduled backups.
Now, to make it more exciting, I did get an error like you:
Now, I did something wrong somewhere, but I have no idea where of course. Not to waste my time, I will enable those documented lines for debug in util file and check again (debug_level = 9 and nsr_debug_msg = yes). Logs will be placed in /nsr/applogs. Now I see following:
I have no idea what this means really except that backint running as SAP user could not access semaphore (memory) files indicating some issue with permissions. At this point, this indicates to me issue on SAP side. And since I use setup which is exactly the same for all SAP instances I backup, I'm 100% sure nothing is wrong with my setup. Checking docs quickly shows:
OK, so let's check:
Removed, tried again, same. OK, so SAP user has to be able to remove file owned by Oracle user. From above we see this is not possible of course. At this point I check sapadm user and see following:
Now, you wish this to be 022 and not 077. Time to walk to the SAP guys
It turns out that UNIX guys created user, but failed to setup profile according to SAP wishes. After that being fixed, it works (not that both oracle and SAP user had umask set wrong) ![]()
If you wish to run it manually from the box, for DB backup you can run
and for archive log backup:
I hope this helps you configure it and get an idea of initial troubleshooting steps.

One more thing... from my experience, sapbackup folder needs read and execute writes for others in almost all SAP implementations I have seen so far - without it, you may get issues too.
