Owner Notification Parser

Question

Hi, I'd like to parse the output of a backup via a program/script that gets executed via the owner notification field in the client config. I'd like this program to take different actions based upon the success of the backup. e.g. change the email subject line based upon success or failure. Also, this will allow me to add the group name to the subject field for better clarity on servers that run multiple backup clients. It seems like this should be possible, has anyone attempted anything like this? What are my potential problems? I am wondering how my program would receive these messages as input. Any ideas? You could direct notifications to disk and parse output and depending on what is reported send such notification with email.
