First thing I would have suggested would be to clear out the client's nsr/tmp which I see you have already done. Does the backup complete at a time after the completion of the post script as shown in the log output? What does the log show there? What are the specified savesets in this instance?
I have upgraded NW client to 7.6.1 as suggested by EMC and it did not fix the problem. To make it simple, we ran savepnpc with echo commands (pre and post), but once again savepnpc logs reported that the backup was completed in 1 minute and executed the post command (it took about 57 minutes to complete the backup). Now EMC wants us to upgrade the NW server, which I am very reluctant to do!
Well, despite not being supported any longer, you may wish to ask for patch. I have HPUX system which I had to patch to avoid this problem some time ago. I checked the server and it is running 7.4.5.4 so I guess 7.4.5.4 and later are not affected. I didn't see also anywhere mentioned this has been an issue with 7.5.x so perhaps it was not, but since updates for 7.4.5.x and 7.5.2.x were released at the same time you should not have an issue with 7.5.2.4 if you have it somewhere. To learn that this is still an issue with 7.6SP1 is a bit - disappointing.

This is a known issue:
ftp://ftp.legato.com/pub/NetWorker/Cumulative_Hotfixes/7.6/Cumulative_7.6_readme.txt
LGTsc33068 (NW00104479): SAVEPNPC: pstcmd runs 60 sec after precmd completes
This fix is not listed in 7.5.x, but EMC might have made a patch for 7.4,x or 7.5.x. In addition, 7.4.x is no longer supported.
Best thing to do is to open a support ticket to inquire about this escalation.
Good luck.

The backup takes about 1 hour to complete, it does not finish in a minute as shown in the savepnpc log.
What does the log show there? What are the specified savesets in this instance?
Daemon logs does not show anything abnormal, just regular savegroup completion notice when the backup is done
We have only one saveset (regular file system) specified

Wallace Lee already mentioned it. PLease look at
https://solutions.emc.com/emcsolutionview.asp?id=esg83459
Open a case with EMC support and ask for a port of the fix to 7.6.1
