You can only write once to a WORM tape. It's supposed to be a permanent archive.

Write. Once. Read .Many = WORM

It's the tape version of WORM (Write Once Read Many) Optical media which by it's nature can not be re-written to. Tape can be re-written but in WORM Tapes software/hardware is used to make them impossible to be overwritten and re-used.

Depending on the situation they are used for permanent archiving due to legal, business or other concerns.
