is it possible to restore from a backup of client no more existing to a different server or do i have to recreate the old server with an exchange 5.5 running with the same name and same setup etc?

It's possible. You just need client resource for old server.

probably impossible as i have only the exchange databases backed up and the client os backups are not available.
is it possible to somehow restore the tape contents (the db files) to disk?

Load your volume.
Try scanner -i or -m to recover media and indexes from volume.

Once done run nsrck -L7 -t date

You don't need original client OS. Just its client resource in NW.

Directed restore is what you do... so source will have data of original server and your targer which actually exists will have its own set of data. Correct? And then you do just directed restore of old to new.
