storage node linux

Hi all,

I'm new to the configuration of Networker and I have few problems to get the tape drives recognised by my Linux boxes.

My backup server is a windows box while I have 4 Red Hat Linux boxes (kernel 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp) that should be configured as Storage Node as they are directly connected to the tape library via fibre channel. My tape library is a HP MSL5026 with 2 tape heads.

The zoning on my fibre channel switches is correctly configured because I can see the jukebox but I cannot see the 2 tape drives (it's my understanding that I should see them as 2 separate devices).

Here is the output of the Networker inquire command :

scsidev@0.0.0:HP HSV200
5030|(Unknown Device Type c), /dev/sg0
S/N: P8BC8F3AAS405C
WWNN=50001FE1500694C0

PORT=00000003

ATNN=COMPAQ MSL5000 Series USX5230008
IENN=00900DE605418000

and here the cat of /proc/scsi/scsi

Attached devices:

The NS E1200-160 (scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 02 Lun: 02) seems to have something to do with the library because it's mentioned in the fibre channel switch and the backup server but not sure what exactly it is.

Am I right thinking that I should see the two tape drives as separate devices?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated as I've lost a lot of time on this without finding an explanation/solution.

thanks
kind regards

Here I am again,

if I get a useful input on this too, I will have to buy some flovers or a round of beer to someone! :)

Now the servers can see the tape devices ok, I can create my storage node ok and the devices are found but when I try to configure them from the Networker Administration (7.3) I receive the following error : "cannot create device;storage node enabler required".

Now, my storage nodes (4), autochanger, DDS (one per device), Networker Server, Update for 7.3, are all registered and authorised ok on the server.

what am I missing here?

thanks and regards
Luca

a) I'm performing LAN backups of my servers ok

To what jukebox. Or even better - how many jukebox defintions do you have now?

b) I'm running it from the backup server. Should I
run it from the Storage Node?

It depends where you robotics is zoned.

Jbconfig is running on host aceback01 (Windows Server
2003 5.2),

and is using aceback01 as the NetWorker server.

1) Configure an AlphaStor Library.
2) Configure an Autodetected SCSI Jukebox.
3) Configure an Autodetected NDMP SCSI
NDMP SCSI Jukebox.
4) Configure an SJI Jukebox.
5) Configure an STL Silo.
6) Configure a Microsoft Removable Storage
e Storage Jukebox.

What kind of Jukebox are you configuring? [1] 2
Scanning SCSI buses; this may take a while ...

All the Jukeboxes that are connected are already
configured.
No new jukeboxes are found on host aceback01

So, all visible jukeboxes are set. Do you the jukebox with inquire -cl (the one not set yet)? If yes, run jbconfig -l. If your jukebox (robotic) is on storage node then run jbconfig -s aceback01 from that storage node.

a) do you have any library definition yet? I assume not
b) from where do you run jbconfig? Actually, can you send jbconfig output.

it looks good so far..

I configured only multipath to 1 server (called aceprod09).

I now have 4 devices : /tape0 & /tape1 and rd=aceprod09:/dev/nst0 & rd=aceprod09:/dev/nst0

I'm running the Inventory right now and then I will run a test backup to see how it goes.. I've also configured the client aceprod09 to use storage node aceprod09 instead of nsrserverhost.

I had tried to remove the library before but without removing the drives ....

cheers

Oh yes, no doubt here - you will need to reconfigure existing setup. So, write down the name of old jukebox, delete it, then delete devices and run jbconfig from server again. You will be asked about sharing devices and you should not have problems during jbconfig. Just make sure you don't do a typo.

Ok.. I think I've got a starting point now. I'll try to remove the definition of Jukebox AND devices and configure DDS (Hope there is an obvious way for configuring DDS)

here the situation at today : 1 library with 2 devices, all clients backed up via LAN. SAN zoning and NSR configuration is now ok and 4 of the clients can see the tape library and the 2 devices. For these 4 client now I want to stop doing LAN backup and configure them as dedicated storage node.

Just to confirm that the storage node is now working ok. thanks again.

only one last question on this matter: I have 2 SDLT devices but 4 storage nodes. At any time, can a tape device be used only from one storage node? => Can the backup of my 4 storage devices be simultaneos (2 storage nodes x SDLT device for example?)

thanks and regards

I have no idea how many logical devices you have defined, but you have 2 physical. At any time, only one physical drive can be used and that is the golden rule. This means that if you have 1 physical drive defined on 2 storage nodes and second one on remaining two you will have 4 tape devices (4 logical). When one logical is in use second one associated to the same physical one will be "in use" state and you won't be able to use it. If all 4 storage nodes see both physical drives what can happen is that first storage node that gets writing allocates both drives and reaming storage nodes have to wait (or any other possible combination - first comes first served). DDS is great thing, but if you have backups going on at the same time on all of them it won't help much. To address that you will need to play with parallelism, target sessions and scheduling of the backups itself. The best approach is probably to have file devices on each storage node and that stage those backups from each of them at different times during the day (outside the backup window) when you can utilize all your physical drives.
