Trouble with Archive services

Hi all,

I am having trouble with the Archive feature of NetWorker.
Archive services is enabled for the client. Client and server both on v7.3.2

I select my data to archive using NetWorker User on the client, with options; Clone, Verify and Groom. I am using the Indexed Archive and Indexed Archive Clone pools.

My data is written to the tape in the Indexed Archive pool, but as soon as it's finished a message appears in the status window stating "Start Cloning." , and that's how it remains.

It appears to be waiting for me to do the cloning!? I manually cloned the two media within NetWorker Administrator, but as expected, the client doesn't recognise this. If I choose File | End Archive, I receive an 'Archive cancelled' message.

Is there something I'm missing with this archive feature?

Thanks,
Barry.

I'm quite surprised to see anyone still using NW for archiving (actually I'm surprised to see EMC still supporting this with NW given that there is separate product line for archiving).

Given that you use 7.3.2 my first question would be - did this ever worked before? Second, did you try to use nsrclone from cmd line in verbose mode to see any additional messages? When your cloning job seems to wait for something do you have any pending requests?

Hi Hrvoje,

Are you referring to ArchiveXtender?
Since the option was available within NW I thought it would be handier for archiving. Does ArchiveXtender offer many extra features worth noting?

First use of archive service is with v7.3.2.
Have tried using nsrclone, but once source media was loaded, it waits. I manually loaded a (only) tape from cloning pool, but received the following in the NW Log;
"Volume 'ARCLONE01' ineligible for this operation.; Need a different volume from pool 'Indexed Archive Clone' "
No other reason/explanation is given.

I will try renaming the tape to a shorter name, and also trying different media.
Also, do you know any difference the Indexed Archive pool and the PC Archive pool, as I cannot find any reference to it in PDFs, but both are available for use. I will perhaps try these pools instead.

thanks,
Barry.

Yes, I was referring to eXtender product familly. They do have many many features there and I think what you are after is called diskxtender or something like that.

First use of archive service is with v7.3.2.
Have tried using nsrclone, but once source media was
loaded, it waits. I manually loaded a (only) tape
from cloning pool, but received the following in the
NW Log;

Clone' "

Could it be that you already have 1 clone on the data on that volume. By default (and you can't change it) NW will not allow you to have same clones on the same tape.

Also, do you know any difference the Indexed Archive
pool and the PC Archive pool, as I cannot find any
reference to it in PDFs, but both are available for
use. I will perhaps try these pools instead.

From nsr_pool manual:

Any archive data not directed to a pool with selection cri-
teria is collected in the Indexed Archive pool. While
Archive pool is the counterpart of Indexed Archive pool that
     does not store index entries.

So it all comes done if you wish to browse archived data or not.

I might give it a try later for test, but I would suggest you contact your support to check it out.

Hi,

After the prompt to "Start Cloning", I managed to successfully run the nsrclone command from the client (earlier problem was due to the fact I had a clone already on the volume from a previous test as you guessed), but I was still left with the prompt and the archive job still hanging in limbo.

I switched to using the 'PC Archive' and 'PC Archive Clone' pools, but this made no difference. ('Archive' pool is for non-indexed, and both 'Indexed Archive ' and 'PC Archive' are for indexed archives).

I then dropped the cloning option, and although the archive completes, it fails verification (nsrarchive: could not find save set.) and consequently, it does not groom the data.

I can't see that there are too many other options to try out so perhaps I'll log a call with support.

Thanks for your help,
Barry.

Hi Hrvoje,

Thanks for trying it out, good to know the feature works!
I have a call open with support and am trying out a few different things. I'll post up the solution here once found.

Regards,
Barry.
