unable to withdraw tapes

Hi folks
I'm new to this forum (please be gentle)

I have a dell ml 6020 tape library
partitioned into two libraries (2 drives, 1 per library, 1 shared robotic arm)

I cant withdraw any tape
I can deposit ok but not withdraw
either from inside the gui or by using commands
I'm in the process of migrating from veritas to legato 7.3.2 (jumbo) I have disabled removable storage.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok I get the following message (Gui)

cancellation: none;
completion code: ;
error message: \
"Jukebox:Prod access:scsidev@6.1.1 failed:MOVE MEDIUM key:5 status:CHECK CONDITION UNKNOWN, Medium \
Removal Prevented";
last update: 1171891347;
messages: Moving media from slot 1 to port 1., Withdrawing 1 cartridges.,
Remove any cartridges from the ports.;
name: Prod;
operation instance: 1;
operation source: GUI jb op;
progress: retryable;
prompt: ;
prompt response: ;
start time: 1171891335;
status: retryable

(command error message)

nsrjb:Error:Jukebox (name) access:scsidev@6.2.1 failed:move medium key: 5 status:check condition unknown, medium removal prevented

The failure you get is not related to NetWorker at all, but rather library configuration itself as it seems. Why and how I have no idea, but perhaps there is something in library docs.

The error you get is error sent by your library via ASC/ASCQ codes. There are many possible reason (if you check for "medium removal prevented" on Google you will see what I mean). I suspect you would get the same with sjimm commands too. You may wish to check library panel for more details.

hmm i seem to be in a catch-22 situation
when i try to export the media using the front panel
it fails as below
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Command not completed

The application using the library disallows removal of media from the library.

1. Clear reservation or prevent commands issued by your host application.
2. Retry operation from operator panel.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
is it possible that it will not export the media until a scheduled job has run and data has been backed up to the tape?
(i have setup jobs already but they are on hold until we are ready to migrate)

bearing in mind i configured the library and legato on my own with no previous experience of either...

It's not the same - if you get device path changed due to lack of binding you won't get "Removal Prevented" which is library issue. Your issue is OS/HBA thing.

I have dealing with this myself a lot lately.

I have a Dell ML6010 w/ 2 drives. Everytime the server reboots it loses the drive paths in the Windows OS, and even if I restore them correctly in Device Mangler, and delete and jbconfig it again, it still gets those UNKNOWN errors and Read Open Errors.

Persistent binding doesn't help either. I am trying binding by Port ID right now, instead of WWPN as I'm typing.

To work around your problem temporarily, stop the Networker Remote Exec Service and use the Library GUI to remove the tapes. Of course this doesn't help with the backups though!

According to what you say you do not have issue like original posted mentioned, but with device order and their binding which is different that what this thread is about.

Same symptoms, software, and hardware though. And seeing as he did not know the cause, it could be the same. Trying to shed some light on it.

Well, then I got two issues, because I'm getting the same errors. Every jukebox operation is failing with the same errors as what the original poster had.
"Jukebox:ML6000 access:scsidev@3.0.1 failed:MOVE MEDIUM key:5 status:CHECK CONDITION UNKNOWN...

But do you get removal prevented too? The error message about move medium is generic and can be for number of reasons. In case of niallo this is valid message because library itself is preventing this move. Probably on library config level this needs to be enabled somewhere (eg. for security reason option to export tape has been disabled by default).

In your case moving tape failed. I assume that would be from tape to slot or the other way around. If that happens try the same with sjimm tools. I once have seen where I had same issue and could do that operation only after putting device offline from OS. It was just required for that drive. After tech replaced drive everything was ok. So in summary, it can be multiple things and the only way to trace it is to test it.

Thanks. Those are good points.

Dell is coming out here tomorrow to do a SAN upgrade (flare code and switches), and I'm going to have them look over the Fibre fabrics as well.

Guys

I believe I can throw some light on the issue.
My problem at least was caused by the legacy Veritas backup exec i'm migrating from
Note: Backup software, such as Legato Networker, use the SCSI PREVENT/ALLOW MEDIA REMOVAL command when using the library. If the software issues a prevent command to the library without a subsequent allow, an export initiated from the remote client or operator panel interface will fail and return permission denied error or a slot full error.
To get around this disable and stop the services for the other backup software and power cycle the library.
This releases the SCSI Prevent/allow media removal.

Issue (for me at least) resolved

Regards and thanks for assistance
