VADP proxy on Networker Server 8.0SP1 or not

The current EMC NetWorker and VMware Release 8.0 SP1 Integration Guide mentions that the proxy cannot be run on the NetWorker Server.

Note: The VADP proxy host cannot be the NetWorker server. Also, if multiple client

instances of the same VADP proxy host exist in the NetWorker server, ensure that all the

instances have the same application information attributes related to VADP.

Any thoughts about that ??? Cause I know a number of customers with this config... so when they upgrade to 8.0SP1, I suppose they will run into problems....

Please advise.

Hi Tom,

NetWorker server as VADP proxy is supported, but its not recommended to use NetWorker server as proxy host.

It's always recommended to install NetWorker Server on a dedicated machine.

I don’t have any experience with 8SP1, but in previous versions it worked without problem. Only problem which could happen from my point of view is problem with app information setting, where all proxy server instances have to include same informations and this could be problem for other backups, but I have never tried it…

I know, but now EMC added a note in the manual... so support will tell you that it’s not supported when you run into trouble.

A lot of customers are using the networker server as a proxy.

I have tried to ask expert from EMC and I was told there should not be technical reason for that. Probably it has not been tested yet.

Hi Tom,

Reason 1: The VADP backup architecture makes the proxy host to run lots of services on the back end which makes worse option to use proxy on backup server.

Reason 2: Sometimes nsrvadp_save.exe do not delete snapshots automatically which hang up the proxy node.

Reason 3: It's a VADP architecture demand to have separate proxy node to work on proxy-server and server-proxy-vm matrix.

Hi TOm,

My NetWorker server is my proxy host as well and I backup all our VADP clients through this proxy

My VADP clients total to 3TB of data and no issues, backups are successful everyday....
