VM Backups are getting failed.

I am using Networker 8.2 Version. VM Backups are getting failed from past 3 days with the below error:

015-11-05 19:33:02 avvcbimage Warning <6788>: Found unknown section 'browse-from-catalog' in workorder, ignoring

2015-11-05 19:33:05 avvcbimage Warning <6788>: Found unknown section 'browse-from-catalog' in workorder, ignoring

2015-11-05 19:33:17 avvcbimage Warning <18652>: Too many extra snapshot files (1) were found on this Windows VMs datastore. This can cause a problem for the backup or restore.

2015-11-05 19:33:17 avvcbimage FATAL <0000>: [IMG0002] The datastore information from VMX '[SDC-SAP-PDEV-147D] LVDBA01/LVDBA01.vmx' will not permit a restore or backup.

Please suggest the cause of this failure.

By the sound of it, it seems like you have unremoved snapshots associated with that VM and that is causing creation of new snapshot to fail.

So should the VM team will be involved in deleting the old snapshots? Or is there any specific path in the VM, where the old snapshots can be found and deleted by anyone?

I'm not familiar with VM hypervisor backups, but I assume VM team should be involved.

During the backup process Networker VBA will attempt to delete leftover snapshots and in my experience it is unlikely the issue.  Most likely there is an orphaned snapshot file which the VM team will need to delete it.  Or if the VM team is uncomfortable with deleting files they could storage vmotion the VM to a new datastore.  See KB for more details.

VBA: Backups fail with the error: <18652>: Too many extra snapshot files

Hi,

I noticed this happening recently in few environments due to Networker and VBA version compatibility.

For temp fix, ask VMware team to take new snapshot manually and delete all snapshot.. This help you on this error.

For permanent fix, please have a look on version compatibility or any changes recently made in proxy server where appliance deployed.

As all said please take assistance from VMware support too.

Hi @sid_mathur,

You can't delete the snapshot file as like we do in windows. If you do so by browsing datastore, it may impact the VM.  Deleting old snapshot nothing that consolidating all snapshot and writing them in vmdk file. I don't know how to explain you, but the thing is manual deletion of snapshot nothing that create a new snapshot with snapshot manager manually and delete all snapshot (which consolidate all old and new snaphot data to master vmdk file). Hope this make some sense.

Sometimes there is an orphaned snapshot file which will not be removed by consolidating or deleting snapshots in the vSphere client.  At which point you can manually delete or safer yet do a storage vmotion.

Hi @Ryan_Johnson,

Yeah, there is a way. Once I tried and finally VM data was lost due to removing manually by deleting the delta file. May be I went through wrong files.

Snapshot was orphaned because the snapshot was locked by Proxy server. That time by restarting proxy server may help you to deleting those orphaned snapshot.
