Check Error: 'VSS error 0x800423f4' when backups fail in Managed Online Backup for System State.  While different product, the reasons behind are the same.  Checking what it says in event log might help too.

Hi Both,

I followed the steps above and also rebooted the client machine.  The backup is now completing successfully again - thank you both!

Regards,

Andrew

To resolve the issue, the procedure is always the same:

  -  User "vssadmin list writers" to detect one which is not in 'stable' state. Unfortunately you will not see a missing one.

  -  Try to solve the issue. You will find tons of tips in the internet for this problem.

  -  Worst case: reboot the server. This will do the job as well.

This may well be but how do you know that you see all at all? - Compare the list with a server where which has the same roles/features.

Also make sure that no other snapshot exist.

Finally, it may well be that you might need to increase the disk space because there is not enough free disk space left. This happened to me once. And I remember that I did not receive any info/error at all.
