What Version to Upgrade To?

I am currently running 7.2.1 in my HP-UX environment. We only do backup, recover and clone for unix filesystem savesets, with 3 cluster file systems ( a small, two-server MC/ServiceGuard cluster). We don't (yet) use the more advanced NetWorker stuff such as encryption, intregrated-database backups, or other products. I would like to upgrade to 7.3 or 7.4 and stay with that release for another year or so. I would appreciate any recommendations for what to choose or what to avoid.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul

My advise is to go to 7.2.2 build 494 by far the best version, we're still getting lots of issues on 7.3 and 7.4 hasn't really been installed at alot of places yet.

7.2.2 build 494 is available for download on the emc website - however be aware in the help about networker screen it reports as 7.2 build 494 - ignore this it is 7.2.2 it's just a programming typo.

What is your reason for upgrade?

Then I would suggest to go to 7.2.2+

If keen to discover 7.3.x world wait for few more days and 7.3.3 will be out.

Sorry, I should have included that info. My last call to EMC support resulted in the statement "Wow, that's old." I took that as a recommendation to upgrade, but I am very happy with 7.2.1 and what it is doing for us.

I didn't have much experience with 7.2.1... I really liked 7.1.3 (plus some patches) and 7.2.2 at latest build is one of most stable versions I had pleasure to work with. Latest builds by 7.3.2 are also nice so I would expect 7.3.3 to be very good too (especially because difference in those builds and 7.3.3 list of fixes is impressive). 7.4 is nice if you need certain functionality which comes with that version, but that is all that makes first release appealing. If you try to go for 7.3.x make sure to plan upgrade of clients too. I had bunch of NMC reporting issues which disappeared as by some magic after my clients went from b11 to b399 (which is something I would not expect as I thought nsrjobd was guilty which is on server and already highest build).

Thanks Hrvoje.

I also neglected to include the option of staying on 7.2.1 for a while longer and ignore the comment from support. Would that be a bad idea?

Thanks to both Hrvoje and Richard,
I greatly appreciate both of you taking the time to respond. I wanted to award helpful points all around and since there really isn't a correct answer to this type of question I was going to end it at that. But I selected Hrvoje's second response by mistake, and don't seem to have an option to assign a third helpful. Because of that I may end up marking Richard's response as correct in order to give him points too. But I wanted to explain and again thank you both for your help!

Regards,
Paul

Hi,

We have nw_7_3_2_jumbo.Build.386. We are not facing any major issues. Should we go ahead with upgrade?

Thanks & Regards

Check docs and decide for yourself.

Thanks Hrvoje,
But I think I'll leave the bleeding edge stuff to those of you who keep track and are aware that it was just released! ;-). Thanks again for all of the info!
