When to switch to a different solution.

Right now we are doing conventional backups for 2500 clients.

Some of the clients have many millions of files and backups are starting to get slow.

I need to advise my customer about when to start looking for different solution for clinets with those  large number of files.

What is the best number to start switching to let's say a NDMP backup?

Answare is snapimage modul, or move these filesystem to NAS and use NDMP protocol for backup.

Depend on backend which gives you backup time… But from my site 2 milions are enough to think about it, because restore time is than usually unacceptable…

Thanks Lukas, but it's not so much the solution I'm looking for.

I am wondering when it is the best time to switch to that solution.

5 million? 10 million?

Our customer does not know the technical side of backups, but I need to give a number, that's the only thing he/she will understand.

Not sure there is a hard number. The key thing is if perfomance is not good enough you need to make a change.

If you HAVE to give an answer I would say when you get into 10's of millions of files its time look to something else.

Also understand that when you run into performace issues related to MANY MANY files the bottleneck can be the NEtWorker database itself and its ability to ingest and update itself. Maybe time to consider ptting the NetWorker DB on SSD if that proves to be the bottleneck. Just an idea.
