2716 Dropping Connection
We have several 2716 switches deployed, some in managed mode w/jumbo frames, some unmanaged. Basically, we have a 2716 in every possible configuration deployed. We use Intel Pro 1000MT cards in the servers.
When pushing a large amount of data from 2 servers to a NAS, the connection will drop. Windows shows a 'Network name is no longer available' error on the sending servers. We used Symantec Livestate recovery to push ghost images from the 2 servers. We've also seen it with other products pushing large files from 2 ports into 1 server.
We've replicated the problem with several different servers, several different switches, and several different products. It seems to be triggered just by pushing large files (1gb) from 2 machines into 1. At this point we're ready to junk all of the Dell switches in our enterprise.

When you refer to several different switches, do you mean other switches in the 27xx product line or different model PowerConnect switches?
If you are configuring your NIC's speed and duplex to be hardset with the PC2716 switches then this might be the problem. The 2716 switch runs auto-negotiation by default. If you configure the NIC to fix speed/duplex the switch will think the NIC is running half-duplex (this is per standard) and will cause the switch to negotiate down to half-duplex. If you run in this environment you will get alot of collision on the link and eventually your system performance will degrade and may cause the errors you are experiencing.
Also, can you tell me what firmware you are running on the 27xx switches? You mention jumbo frames, there was a bug with jumbo frames that has been fixed in the latest firmware version 1.0.1.07 which you can download from support.dell.com
Also when you say the connection drops, what exactly do you mean? Do you see a physical connection drop? If you start a continous ping, do they stop? Or is it just a windows connection error?

The error that we get is a windows error. When the error happens, a windows error pops on the screen "unable to copy (filename is here) to (location is here). The specified network name is no longer available". The link does not drop though. This has been happening when we do ghosts from 2 machines at the same time to a network share on a 3rd device on the same switch. This has also happened when we're doing a large SQL database backup from 2 machines at the same time to a 3rd device on the same switch, so I don't think it's the product related.
