3324 and MDI/MDIX

i have many of these and just noticed something. i use cat5e crossover cables connecting the switches (g1/g2) to our backbone switches. the rest of the ports are hosts connected via straight through patch cable. all of these hosts are identical machines (hardware/software) but the MDI/MDIX settings are all over the board.

i have auto neg set on and have never messed with the MDI/MDIX settings. what are they all set differently if this should be determined by the cable type and/or NIC. btw latest FW is in effect...

thanks.

All of the PowerConnect products support Auto MDI/MDIX with auto-negotiation enabled. This allows the ports to negotiate how the port needs to map the conductors and eliminates the necessity for using crossover cables.

The reason the MDI/MDIX settings seem random is due to the fact that the ports are negotiating with the other side of the link. Most newer network devices and NICs support auto MDI/MDIX, so they will make their own decision whether to cross the conductors internally based upon the device being connected and the type of cable being used. The only time you need to be worried about the cable type and MDI/MDIX settings is when auto-negotiation is disabled. When auto-negotiation is disabled, the auto MDI/MDIX feature is also disabled.
