5224 multicast address limit

Hi,

Here is the system detail of 5224 switch.

Serial number          :TW03N3597042038P0024
 Service tag            :C801221
 Hardware version       :A07
 Number of ports        :24
 Main power status      :up
 Redundant power status :not present
Agent(master)
 Unit id                :1
 Loader version         :1.0.0.0
 Boot rom version       :1.0.0.5
 Operation code version :3.1.0.16

The problem is than I can not configure more than 62 multicast address in the switch. What is the limit? I also can not configure any multicast address from command line. I added 62 address via web interface.

Console(config)#ip igmp snooping vlan 2 static 224.0.0.160 ethernet 1/2
Failed to add static multicast group member port

Thanks,

Rajesh

Actually, the limit appears to be 64 multicast groups. The switch will allow you to add static groups to the multicast MAC address table up to 64 groups (including those learned dynamically via IGMP). Once the 64 group limit is met, the switch will not allow you to add more groups.

I have requested information regarding this limit from our engineers and will update this thread when I receive a reply. There is most likely nothing that can be done to increase the amount of static groups, but I am asking whether the switch is capable of learning more than 64 groups dynamically via IGMP.

Hi Greg,

I tried adding groups dynamically via IGMP snooping but it doesn't more than 64. I CLI user's guide under IGMP Snoopin chapter the limit is show as 32768. As the switch is based on 2 nos of Broadcom BCM5632 which has capacity for 32768 unicast+multicast addresses so it is not hardware limitation but a software limitation which is easily fixable by recompiled with a limit such as 4096 or so.

Thanks,

Rajesh
