6224 no console activity / how to use reset button

I have a pair of 6224 switches stacked. A power loss rendered member 1 (master) unresponsive. member 2 took on role of master and booted fine. Member 1 has Master light on as well as Power and Fan but no port lights at all.

I replaced both switches and now trying to get these working again. Through a combination of power cycling and removing trunk cables I have been able to get member 1 responsive and reset to factory default. NOW member 2 is exhibiting the exact symptoms. I have tried everything I know to do but cannot get ANY console activity. The Power and Fan lights flicker after power cycling like there is activity but nothing on console and no lights on any ports if I plug in.

I have searched high and low for documentation on how to use the front panel reset button to reset the switch. I CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WHATSOEVER! I have tried holding it down for 20 seconds on power on as well as doing the same with power already on. NOTHING.

Currently, the trunk card for xg1/2 is removed from both switches. Any help?

Hi Mark,

The button shouldn’t need to be held in, it should just need to be pressed. It does a reload on the switch, it does not reset to factory defaults, so if there is an issue that might not resolve it. On member 2 is there anything connected aside from power and the console cable? You could try and reset with the boot menu, maybe it will still take commands even if there is no output.

Connect power to both switches. When the one that works shows the option to press 2 for the boot menu, hit it on the other switch. Then arrow down 9 times to option 10.

When I press the reset button it does not reload. The only thing visible is it turns the Fan and Power lights off while it is being pressed. This is the case on the unresponsive switch AND the working switch.

I have tried this with and without trunk cables and trunk card installed/uninstalled with no change. I have swapped the trunk cards and cables as well to see if the problem follows the cables or cards but no change there either. There is nothing else attached.

I am running code 3.3.7.3.

When setting stack members on the working switch, it never detects member 2. When I run a show switch the management status is Unassigned

I tried to reset with the boot menu as requested but no dice. Any other ideas?

Is the switch still under warranty? You could try updating the firmware on the working one and see if it will stack, but there are not any other options if we can’t get any response out of it. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=TWGNF&fileId=3383798720&osCode=NAA&productCode=powerconnect-6224&languageCode=EN&categoryId=NI

Still no luck. Unit is out of warranty:

Management Standby   Preconfig     Plugged-in    Switch        Code

SW  Status     Status    Model ID      Model ID      Status        Version

--- ---------- --------- ------------- ------------- ------------- -----------

1   Mgmt Sw              PCT6224       PCT6224       OK            3.3.11.2

2   Unassigned           PCT6224                     Not Present   0.0.0.0

It would seem that there would be some info in relation to the fan and power lights flickering and the master light solid. This never changes regardless nor does the console register any activity. Looks like I am going to have to declare it dead unless someone has any other ideas.

Good ideas but already tried. The second switch comes up with master led on along with power and fan leds flashing. This never changes either with stacking configured or not on switch one nor with trunk cables attached/unattached or trunk card(s) in or out (xg1/2).

Mark,

I noticed that you have at least two firmware versions on different members.  You may consider taking all of the stack configuration from the switches and make them stand-alones (also removing the preconfigured and unassigned), then upgrade them all to 3.3.11.2, or the latest firmware, but make sure they are all the same. Most newer switches today will not allow different fw versions in a stack or will auto-update the versions to match the master. Once they all match, then restack them.

On a side note, it sounded as though you may have been attempting to console into a stacked member.  Often a member will not allow a console connection which is set aside for the master only.

Hope this was helpful.

There is simply no access to this switch either through stack or console. It will not give me access in any way to the boot code or firmware so I can even attempt to change that.
