If the authentication is mis-configured and you cannot log into the switch, you will need to use the Password Recovery option.

  1.  Reboot the switch
  2. When prompted, hit Esc or Enter to access the Boot Menu
  3. Use option 4 for Password Recovery
  4. On the next reboot, the switch will ignore any passwords
  5. Remove the authentication settings configured. To reset the default authentication method for the console use the following commands:

          console(config)# line console
          console(config-line)# login authentication defualt

I can login through the console, but I want to remove the requirement for a console password. I tried:
1. Rebooting with password recovery and the commands you specified and it didn't seem to work. I may be missing something.
2. I tried logging in the issue the no login authentication ... and no password commands. When I reboot it says "authentication failed" "hit any key".

I then copy my backup start-config file from my tftp server to get back to my original config. All I want to do is remove the requirement for the console password. I'm probably missing something , my experience is limited on these switches.

UPDATE: I may have stumbled on the explanation. If you use the "aaa authentication login default line" command with "line telnet" to set a password for a telnet session, does the operating system then require you to set a password for the console?

Thank you
