Dell PowerConnect 2848 MCLI Mode?

I just powered on a Dell 2848 and it boots to a ">" prompt.. And only gives me the following three commands.

Help, mcli, debug..

No Enable, Conf t, or anything useful like that.

When I type "mcli" it wants a password..

When I ran a test the I2C failed.

I don't get any initial config wizard either. I just took this thing out of the box.. or so I think.

How can I configure this and what exactly is MCLI mode?

Hi,

I've got the exact same issue logged with Support. The initial answer was:

Clear Switch configuration back to factory defaults:

At the Privileged Exec prompt, type delete startup-config and press <Enter> to delete the startup configuration in NVRAM.

Type reload and press <Enter> to reboot the switch. Type y to continue the reload process.

However that does not resolve it (as you also indicate, there is no way to get to privileged mode).

Did you find a resolution? I'll continue on with support in hope of a quick solution

Yes,  The switch is unmanaged by default, therefore you can not put in an IP Address or anything.

You need to use a Pin to hit the "mode" button on the front of the switch.

(Be connected to console to follow the instructions)

Seriously though who uses unmanaged switched?? and why would Dell send them out unmanaged by default.

Good to hear you've resolved your problem

These are the instructions I get after pressing the mode button:

To perform reset do not release the mode button for 7 seconds.
operational mode button is pressed on
Manage status changed from unmanaged to managed state
Please reconnect from EWS
01-Jan-2000 00:00:35 %LINK-W-Down:  Vlan 2
01-Jan-2000 00:00:35 %LINK-I-Up:  Vlan 1

Are the instructions, however 192.168.2.1 is not responding, a network sniffer does not help much as I cant get the switch to identify itself. It very much looks like its already configured on some other address, however I cant progress from here.

You can reset the device using the (EWS) embedded web server.  Some very good instructions can be seen at the Spiceworks forum here:

http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/1021

You will need to connect VIA hyperterminal and with a network cable with an offline workstation or laptop if available.  Then just set your static IP address for your LAN card to the same octet and subnet as the device default.  I had to do this for ALL 4 of the switches I received from Dell myself!!  Was rather annoying but they all work perfectly now.

Hi all,

I have the same scenario, mcli only. Can i configure SNMPv3 via MCLI or do i have to enable the Manage mode ?

Also if i enable, will the switch perform some kind of reboot process ? Because this switch is in production and i don't want to change something that will make the switch go to reboot process :).
