Dell Switch Management Software
What functionality is offered in the Dell OMNM system?
We have about 20 6248 switches in our entire network, so its not very big. Do we even need OMNM?
How about just using free monitoring software (theyre all over the Internet) or even something lie Solarwinds and calling it a day? That will give us all the alrm reporting we need, and when we need to manage the switch we telnet.
Does this make sense or is there some other reason that OMNM is used?
Thanks!

I have used it before and it was quite bulky, apparently they have cleaned it up a bunch in the new version but have not used it. We use PRTG and it works great and is quite cost effective. Benefit is it works with multi-vendor equipment.

OMNM will allow you to perform group operations to all of your 6248's at once, including deploying firmware and scheduling regular backups. It will not only monitor, but due to Dell's additional effort in creating device drivers for each Powerconnect model, also allow you to make changes to your switches without requiring knowledge of the CLI or doing any scripting as with other management apps. There is more information on OMNM at www.dell.com/networkmanager and you can download and use for free (up to 10 devices) without an expiration. As bdearlove said, it can be upgraded to work with other vendors on the network as well.
