Using the serial cable:

During boot the Startup menu can be used to run special procedures. To enter the Startup menu, press or within the first two seconds after the auto-boot message is displayed.

Then you can erase startup, and start over

Thank you,

Can I follow the same procedure for erasing the running config as well?

The running config is not in non-lolatile memory.  At power-up, the startup-config is loaded into the running config and configures the switch.  Any changes made to the switch configuration will have to be stored in the startup-config or backup-config to be available after a reboot or reset.

There is also a backup-config file which can be used to save an alternate configuration.  The backup-config is loaded into the running command by an explicit copy command.

console# copy backup-config running-config
