First of all decide what IP address you want to give the switch ( to access the management for set up ), the default gateway for that subnet, the username and password you want, and if you want to manage the switch via SNMP, the community strings and the IP address of the management app ( the SNMP stuff is all optional, so don't worry if you don't use it.
With the switch will have come a console cable DB9FDB9F.
Connect the console port on the switch to the serial port on your PC.
Run up hyperterminal ( or similar ); configure the COM port for the serial port - normally COM1 - to 9600,8,N,1, flow control off. Turn on the switch - you will see the boot up sequqnce reported on hyperterminal - as its a new switch with no config, it will enter the set up wizard, where you put in the IP address etc etc. Once you finish and accept, the switch will finish booting, and now you can access the web GUI via a web browser using the IP addres of the switch.
you need your pc connected to one of the network ports - the pc will need an ip address within the same subent as the ip address you've given the switch - then put in the ip address of the switch as the \url
I got it...thanks....I had to just plug the switch into an open CAT5 here and I was able to enter the GUI with no problem from another PC on the subnet......it is up and running now....

Hey...thanks
....however I did get that far, but my problem now is I can't get to the GUI via the browser.....do I have it connected properly?
Should I remove the console cable now and connect a CAT5.....if so...where do I connect the CAT5 on the switch? Any particular port?
