LAG issues on dell x1052 and x1018p

so i have a dell x1052 and only one vlan setup using 10.10.0.0/20. im trying to do something very simple. create a lag between the 1052 and 1018 using 2 ports. subsequently  id also like a lag between the 1052 and a ubuntu server.

so i have the 1052 with one cable going to the 1018. i go through the steps and setup lag.... i get the notification that packets are being forwarded. when i disconnect the original cable linking the two switches i loose all connectivity to the 1018. if i plug the cable back in i can access the gui again.
