Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply. To config trunk mode as "general" did not make difference.  I configed both Cisco and Dell to run MSTP as suggested by Dell docu, and also upgraded Dell7048P to the latest code (5.1.10.1).  The issue I am seeing is that both Cisco and Dell claim as root bridge on each instance of MST (except instance 0).  Not sure why MST did not work between Cisco and Dell. I am scratching my head.  Much appreciated if you can provide some idea.

Thanks

Charles

Hello, looks like switches can't exchange special VLAN 1 information, on the Cisco side you shouldn't add vlan 1 into allowed vlan list, since this vlan default native and should be untagged.

Also I suggest you to add vlan 1 as native (untagged) on PowerConnect side as well.

Keep in mind Cisco can exchange stp service information between different vendor switches only over vlan 1 when it's configured as native.

Also your Cisco switch showing:

Po30 Desg FWD 6660 128.2056 P2p Bound(PVST)

so it didn't recognized MSTP running on the PowerConnect side, it thinks that he's region boundary switch

HI all,

I tried many times with different methods but still having issue between Cisco 3850 and Dell7048P Powerconnect switch.

I changed both sides to run MSTP, but 3850 still think Dell7048 is a region boundary switch.

Port channel 105 (layer 2) is the layer 2 trunk between them and it is blocked on Dell side by MSTP. The only thing I can think of is that there may some mismatch on MST config between both, but I can't find out what mismatch is?

Is anyone here had any good suggestion?  Many thanks

Charles

The only thing I can see is that vlan to instance 0 mapping on both is a bit different.

Cisco 3850:

Instance Vlans mapped
-------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
0 2-79,81-99,101-104,106-649,651-4094

Dell:

Instance Vlan Mapped
---------- -----------------------------------------------
0  4093

But, there is no way to modify vlan list on instance 0.   I was trying to create all unused vlan on Dell side in order to make vlan-list to be matched on Cisco, but Dell7048 does not support so many vlans.

Does this mean even MSTP is not possible to run in this scenario ?

Cheers

Charles

Hi Murmanov,

Sorry it was my typo. it should be port channel 105.

In our environment, I have 2 stand-alone Cisco 3850 (SW01 & SW02) connecting to Dell7048P stack (SW03). There are 3 layer 2 port channels between each SW, and each portchannel is only allowed to passs one vlan traffic.  In order to trouble shoot, I shutdown most of port channel between SW02 and SW03.

I was also having issue with PVST+ (SW1&2) and RSTP (SW3), and I finally decided to move to MSTP across all 3 SWs. After MSTP, I see port channel 105  and 107 are blocked (discarding) by MSTP, and both portchannel are used for same vlan traffic, 105 is on SW01and SW03 side, and 107 is on SW02 and SW03 side.  For some reason, SW03(Dell7048) don't think itself is inside of the region where SW01 and SW02 are. I guess this is because the vlan and instance mapping of instance 0 on Cisco and Dell is slightly different.

I exhaused all my effort and don't know what to do. I will be be really appreciated if you can provide some assistance.

Thanks

Charles

Hello, Charles, I don't see any problems in your output at this moment.

On Dell switch 7048 I see that Po115 showing as Root port in your stp output.

Also root bridge id for both instances showing that Cisco 3850 is root.

Can you please confirm, do you have 2 port-channel connected from Cisco 3850 to Dell 7048 ?

Hi Charles

Issues like this can be tricky and indeed tiring.

Hopefully we’re able to assist you on this one, usually there are some requirements that must match in terms of MST between switches:
1) MST name
2) MST configuration revision number
3) VLANs mapped to instances

In order to make both switches part of a common MST region, a group of switches must share the same configuration attributes.
Have you tried configuring an MST test instance with a few VLANs shared in both Cisco and Dell?

If that still does not work, we suggest you to open a discussion at the Cisco community so an expert on this matter can help solve this issue:  https://supportforums.cisco.com/community/6016/lan-switching-and-routing

Also, perhaps this “MST Configuration and MST Region” information may be useful:

Hi Hldacss,

I also had Webex with Murmanov twice, and we believed there are some non-standard thing in MSTP at Dell side, which caused 2 of 3 MST instances not to converge properly with Cisco.

MST config on both Cisco and Dell is definitely matched.  I am thinking replace Dell switches we have in DC with Cisco ones....

Cheers

Charles
