N2048 Failed firmware update

Hi,

I relatively recently started a new role with quite a lot of Dell switches in the estate - not something I've had a lot of experience with in the past. I quickly noticed that all of the firmware on the switches were very old so have started updating them.

On Saturday a switch I had prepped for updating rebooted for an unknown reason and never came back up necessitating a site visit and a swap out.

When consoling onto the switch it was stuck booting at:

validate shmoo parameters stored in flash .....

My queries are, 1) is the switch recoverable or is it now bricked / toast

2) any idea what caused it? IIRC the code I was upgrading from was 6.3.2.3 and the code I was upgrading to was 6.6.0.7, it seems like a big jump but I couldn't find any docuemation to state I should be doing a stages upgrade

Cheers

Hi,

It should have been fine to go that far, maybe stop at a 6.5 version. You may be able to recover it if you can get to the boot menu and have it boot from the backup flash or delete the current one or update from the boot menu over serial.

The switch won't get past the validating Shmoo section which is within the first few seconds of startup, so I don't think I can get to the boot menu

I've contacted Dell Tech support who have advised based on the same screenshot that it's a hardware failure and are sending out a replacement device

Cheers
