Powerconnect 6248 Crashes - DRAW Charts

So we've been using the 6248 for over a year and it has been up and reliable during the entire time. I finaly got some time to load up the web management and one of the first things i tried was to draw a chart on port statistics.

Upon clicking DRAW the application froze and within minutes the switch reset it self.

While I can live without the charts I wanted to know if anyone has experienced this and if there is a solution. I imagine the processor just can't handle it.

hi,

upgrade to the latest firmware! there was a bug one year ago.

hint: use tftp to upgrade and stick to the manual (do not forget to issue  update bootcode command)

since your switch is over a year old it will probably suffer from the flash corruption issue in the earlier firmwares. As mentioned above pay close attention to the firmware update procedure as it has instructions to fix the corruption issues.

Tanks for the suggestion, I did attempt to update on Friday but it kept failing, I followed the instructions and fixed some errors with the chkdsk command procedure but even after that I was unable to update.

I downloaded some free TFTP server from solarwinds and think it might be the server that is not letting me upload now. Any suggestons for TFTP servers?

I usually use the solarwinds server without any problem. But if thats not working i would suggest going into the boot menu on the switch, change the baud rate to max (change the baud rate of your terminal client to match) and use xmodem to send in the firmware. I have also seen where the prescribed procedure for fixing the flash doesnt work and if you read a little further down in the firmware update manual they list another procedure for fixing the flash which involves completely formatting everything on the switch (like a factory setup). but make sure you play close attention to the serial/service tag/mac address values that you have to record down and reinput.

Good luck!

You are probably experiencing the corrupt flash issue.  What you will need to do is open up the pdf "Downloading the Software" that is in the zip file you downloaded that also has the firmware file.  Go to the end of the pdf and follow those instructions for updating the firmware via Boot Menu.

Make sure you right down the MAC address, serial number (Dell P/N), and the service tag and follow those directions to the tee.

Again thanks for the help. We are in the process of buying a few new switches so the update will have to wait until those arrive so I can do it while it is off the network.

I will mark this topic as 'Solved' at that time.

Unfortunately I have been trying to convince a Cisco fan at the office here on how well these switches work in order to convince him that we should buy more of them but this situation hasn't helped me at all.

Bash flash happens. I have a stack of Bricked Cisco gear here that cant be fixed because of it. Does Cisco make good gear, of course. But is it always worth 3X the money, not always. Dell gear has its place, aside from the flash issue initially i havent had any problems with the many stacks of 62XX switches i have deployed.
