Stacking 3024 and 3048

Question

Hi   Hope you can help me understand stacking.   Am I right in thinking that stacking serves two purposes:   1) Management as one unit 2) Transfer of packets between the two switches.  What I am trying to get at is if I stack then can I do away with using a gig port on each unit to link together.    I am wanting to free up a gig port on one of the switches for a NAS device and am hoping that by utilising the stacking connector this will allow this?   If this can be done, there seems to be no info in the user manaual as to what you seen to configure in each switch to enable stacking.  Is there any more info available to help me?   Thanks

Ok   I have now got them connected and it seems to be working fine BUT   I can no long ping either switch nor user the manager consol.     I can connect using hyperterminal   I am almost there just need some help with setting up so I can user the browser to manager   Anyone??
